Hey all,
I have an old leather jacket that I got when I was 13 years old. My mom got it from a store here and pretty sure it wasn't expensive at the time or a brand name. I remember at the time that there was a strong smell of leather for months. I used to wear it a lot in my teens, but haven't worn it in years. Im in my late 30s now and got back into leather jackets and tried it on and it looks amazing!! My worry is that it says it was made my india and China (don't know how thats possible) and im worried thay they used toxic chemical when tanning the leather. Should I be worried about wearing it? And do you think all those yeats of wearing it in my teens could've caused anything bad ? I really want to wear it again, so looking forward to hearing your takes on the chromium and other chemicals thay mightve been used

The fact that you were given a jacket at the age of 13 and can still wear it 25 (+ or -) years later is a miracle in itself. You must have been a robust lad at the time or grew into the jacket based on the attached image.

Any chemicals/treatment the jacket received when manufactured would have long since dissipated depending on how it was stored. If concerned, you could obtain a full-face respirator and wear it along with the jacket to ensure you are not inhaling any latent chemical residue.

Hahaha. It was always big on me, but since gaining muscle from bodybuilding, it fits perfectly now

Of course the process of tanning is toxic. Chemicals are used in order to arrest decomposition and that's toxic for sure however, I'm w/ Steve; worry about something else. If you want a glimpse into the process you can try this link:

If you're interested in knowing why or how a jacket could have two countries of origin it would be unusual but plausible that the hide may have been tanned in China and the jacket sewn in India. You may have heard that many in India are big fans of cows, don't eat them and don't slaughter them. Chinese people have no such compunction.

Please take photos of the labels in that jacket and post them in this thread. I'd bet you a nickel that somebody here will know a lot about it.
