HUGE Lileks fan

Jim Lileks is one of the best things on the net. The whole site is fantastic, even the daily running prattle.
The Gallery of Regrettable Food is SO funny. "A roast that looks like Orson Welles' liver..."
Nice to see you around, PrettySquareGal.

I was just looking through the collection of restaurant postcards and said, "hey I think I know that place..." The circle restaurant in King George, Virginia... Its now called "Bowies" and it's on the way out to where I work. I stopped there once out of curiosity and had a hot roast beef sandwhich and a coke. They still offer car service. hahahaha.

That's cool!

I collect old postcards but never got into hotels. Now I must start looking!

And another one...

I just keep on seeing familiar sites:

http://lileks.com/postcards/rest/restbatch2/frost.html

Warrenton is only a 30 minute drive from where I grew up, and where the local community college I attended for a couple years was. The frost diner is still there, and they still make good hamburgers.

wondering if I'll see any other place from around here...

P.S. for anyone interested in vernacular architecure, or the roadside architecture of the 20's-50's here is a neat website: http://www.jitterbuzz.com/indpla.html
If you scroll down, you can see two places from my hometown: Gayhearts drugstore (which is no longer there as a drugstore... the riteaids and CVS's shut the drugstore down... but they converted it into a 50's looking diner, that serves mediocre food. :() Then, there is baby jims snack bar, which is a great little place that sells burgers and stuff for really good prices. (the author of the website claims the food isnt that great, but I beg to differ.)
My grandparents went on dates to Baby Jims, and my parents went on dates there as well. I've eaten there billions of times, but I think it would be fun to get taken on a date there to carry on tradition. :) I just need someone to go who doesnt mind a greasy spoon joint.

Enjoy :)

I noticed Lileks has a book called "Mommy Knows Worst". I had to laugh. When my hubby's grandmother died, I chose from her things a booklet she got in 1942 called "Baby's Outfit: A Book for Mothers". It has some great advice in it for the new mother (she'd just given birth to my mother-in-law), most of which has since been totally changed to prevent little things like crib death, etc. Anyway, I'll have to check out Lilek's book...

(The other thing I got from her things was a really cool hat, but that goes in another thread!)

And I loved the postcards!:)

Neat stuff! I love old architecture and I'm glad to hear there are still some greasy spoons around! We were trying to explain Stuckey's to the kids recently, and it was lost on the McDonald's-on-every-corner-and-at-every-exit-on-the-interstate-generation.

I spent 13 years in Texas and I believe a couple of those motels are still in operation - I'm darn near sure the one in Temple is still open with the same sign.
