Geez, you sure you want to sell that before you know exactly what it is? May have been used to cook a meal for some Imperial Monach, easy to tell it was NOT something to make hot dogs in. Someone should know about that Randall, I would pull that listing until you know what it is! Can you hear those words, "antique roadshow"???????The things on the bottom are a "signature" you can bet of who crafted it. Geez, find some website that sells high priced knives made by some master crafters in Japan...send them a picture of that and just ask them what in Tar'nations is it? Some one would know? Is it from Japan or China? Is it from some place in the middle east? Library time?????? Hate to see you sell something that may be from the Foo Choo dynasty that may have been worth a few rolls royces for a few USD's.....just my opinion.

You may be right, Daniel! I'm not much of a researcher, I'm afraid. Are you interested in doing some detective work on my behalf, say for a Rolls Royce? :)

I have nothing but time on my hands, sure...let me do some digging, I will download the pictures and go from there...but you need to pull that listing before you sell it and until it is known what that really is?!?

There are a few places even here in Michigan I can send pictures to, a "Boos" gallery may have some information on this. There is also a University not too far, I can seek some input from them as well.

I've simmered a few small batches of chili in it, but the three ridges on the bottom elevate it slightly above the electric coil on the stovetop, which makes it a bit inefficient. If I had a gas stove, I'd keep it.

It's nice and thick and sturdy.

Smart move, as you know you can always sell it later even if it is not a antique twinkie marker for some royal family of the orient.

Yes Randall. Good idea to always find out what you do have before parting with it. More so with things that may be older than me! You don't know, Attila the HUN may have used this pan for something?????? Let me find out what I can. I think the markings along the outer top side have some meaning, and I am sure the design on the bottom is a signature of some sort, as I do not know what it means, I have to just seek out someone that does know. Oh yes, there are a few Fedora Loungers in Japan also....I should make them aware of this and see what they may tell me as well! If nothing pops up in a day or so, I am contacting Sherlock, as he will know......(the game's a foot)!

Well now that I see it, it's gone!;)

But, from a fair bit of int'l travel, and an interest in both food and antiques, I'd say it's a cooking or perhaps, just a serving pot - the holes are for a carrying loop, and the script looks more thai/laotian to me than Japanese. The ridges on the bottom I have seen often on cast iron, either to keep it upright sitting on coals, or more likely in this case, feet to keep the hot bottom off the table - that would be consistent with a serving rather than preparation vessel. So there's my amateur Road Show spiel - let us know what you find out!

I replied before I saw your response. All of that makes very good sense.

As luck would have it, I was able to contact a family member of the original Antique Roadshows. They still do appraisal work and auctions. I will hope that source will be able to find out just what in tarnation this pan is all about?!? It sure does however, have the appearance of something that was made a long time ago. I will have to wait for a reply and I am sure Randall will share that with everyone, as this does belong to him. As for me, I would do what I can to help anyone here on the Lounge. Now if this was something I personally knew about, say like a hundred dollar hammer, I could reflect some expertise.....but alas...the only thing I do know about cook ware is how to cook in it and clean it later! Fried fish anyone?

Oh yes, the person whom was in charge of the auction house with the experts had at one time been heavy into vintage bow ties! TIES I tell you. I know Jamespowers would have loved to have known this gentleman!

I would have indeed liked to know the gentleman. I am more into neckties but I have about 100 boties as well. :p My sons like them more than I do. :D

I should also get a few pictures of my collection up as well. I have no idea how much mine are worth either. :p

I would love to see them all. Sadly the person that was a "bow tie guy" passed away, but his family is still pressing forward with the craft of doing auctions and appraisals. They are the number one expert in this state for knowing anything about items of value. Top Notch. And they are some just great and kind souls as well.

Darn!
I'll have to get some pictures of my collection. There are plenty of interesting pieces. One I like a lot is a wine pitcher that has a top that can also be used as a cup. Ther is an inscription on it as well. No idea what it says but it has an inscription. The modern Chinese Language is not written that way anymore. :p
