The seller bids low on obscure listings, then spiffs up the hat, gives it an attractive bash and writes an imaginative description. It's a good formula, and one I'll emulate once I get around to selling the dozen or so hats I've determined I won't keep.

I just checked on what he's bought recently. He buys great hats for next to nothing! How did everybody else miss these hats?

I saw this hat when it first came up and said to myself, "I bet someone will go nuts and pay over $50.00 for that hat". This makes me think I too should list some of my hats. You can never tell with ebay. This goes for over $200 and then others get great high quality vintage hats for under $50. This seller seems to have a good supply of hats. There are some FL members from the central Ca. coast and I have wondered if this seller is one of you. Too bad his descriptions of the hats are infomercial-like and go on and on (like I want to read a story while on ebay). Very syrupy and makes me wonder about fact since there is so much fiction involved in the description. I expect a line like, "what do I gotta do to put you under this lid today?" I like to be able to find what size the hat is without reading about detectives and the mob.

That would be the Lockheed 14 Super Electra, it would later morph into the designs that became the Hudson bomber, and later PV Ventura for the Navy.

The store was 'Savidge Bros. Newton, Penna' as stamped in gold on the sweatband. 'Royal Stetson Stratonliner' also embossed in gold on the sweatband.

I'm also looking for online info on the history of the Stratoliner - hat and plane - that i can use to beef up my description. Anyone know a source (or can tell me about these things)?

Stratoliners were made from the early 40s to the early 60s and then discontinued. Whereas the Open Roads continued to be made up to the present. That's why the Strats are scarce. Are you really sure you want to sell it? Unless you really need the money they are a real collectable, much more so than the Open Roads.

That seller always tells a little story for each hat listing. Maybe that's what sells them? Plus the fact that they sell some nice hats.

Many pictures and a fancifully embellished story along with an accurate description gets the money every time.
The seller has not one negative feedback in over 1500 transactions.
And in the post just below we find that the seller is a Pro in marketing...He has the Power!

The power of the magic 3/4 angle

If you look at this seller's hat photos, you will always find at least one that is taken at that magic 3/4 angle where you can see the sideways S shape curve created by the two humps in the top center crease, as well as the sensuous curve of the side pinch on the other side of the crown. He obviously understands the visual impact of that angle and rotates his hats until he gets it. He also makes sure the lighting highlights the top ridges while keeping the valley in darkness. At the same time he manages to throw a subtle light on the side pinch nearest the viewer. Not just any lighting angle will do this. You can tell he is an artist. The photos make me drool.
