I think the answer to the original question is - there is absolutely no correlation between hat wearing and other characteristics, except 'having style.' lol

One thing I've learned over the years is, it's impossible to conjure a stereotypical fedora wearer. Hats are what we all have in common, and we aren't even all on the same page with that.

Traits

I know we all take different routes to getting a first hat. For me, it was reading up on the shave forums (shavemyface.com), or askandyaboutclothes, or even fountainpennetwork. I know there are men there that share things that I like so I was wondering if the reverse is true.

So, who uses a badger brush (custom made Rooney beehive), English shave creams and DE razors?

Who uses fountain pens? I tried but now have a Visconti Divina Maxi roller ball as fountain pens are not as practical for me (sometimes you have to sign things at court, other people want to borrow it and push too hard).

Are hat wearers more fastidious about suits and ties and wear cufflinks?

What a good thread! Ok, let me see. I'm an old school shaver: Merkur saftey razor, classic; 3824 Savilrow shaving brush; I have about 10 different shaving creams and about five different shaving soaps-- Musgo Real is my favorite cream and Tabac is my favorite soap!

I actually still haven't bought a felt hat, but I do have a wonderful Straw Stetson (not sure the name off hand, sort of a trilby looking thing).

I love fountain pens, but I don't want to just run out rash and buy one. I'm still doing research into what I would like to buy.

I've always liked looking nice, whether I was in my punk phase in the late 70's, or preppy phase in the late 80's (I missed grunge in the 90's) or in my "wanting to be more vintage but think I don't look nice in anything" phase that I'm currently going through.

But, I don't think I'm OCD on my looks-- just in locking doors! lol

Another vintage hat-wearing and lovin' lady here (waving my hand at the screen and saying woo hoo...). Though unlike analiebe here I am 50, okay technically I'm 51 as of Thursday 8/27... but I do own a pair of 30s vintage tuxedo trousers that I had custom altered to fit my figure that occasionally I wear with a very feminine blouse or sweater. Sorry no boyish/deco dandy look for me here, I'm too curvy. I'd rather wear a dress everyday and almost do! The 30s and 40s dresses are so gorgeous!

Yeah fellas- the hats and all the accessories aren't just for the gents! I use a fountain pen too, and watch old movies every chance I get. I love to foxtrot, swing, and waltz to big band music and enjoy wearing vintage 40s (and sometimes vintage 30s too) garb as often as I possibly can.

Enjoy looking through vintage LIFE and other period magazines and my first movie star crush was on Fred Astaire in seventh grade, watching the old F&G films on late night television in the early 1970s. Have worn very dressy vintage-inspired day looks and fancy evening wear for many years. Grew up listening to Art Deco and Golden Era music most of my life.

One of the best things about being involved in all of this now is getting the opportunity to share all of this knowledge and doing period fun things/events with my husband and our two children, ages 13 (son) and 15 (daughter).

don't forget fellas that there are hat-wearing dames out there too... i adore 1940's & 50's style although i'm not yet 40 or 50 myself... i absolutely adore to write with a fountain pen... i love a well tailored skirt suit and have been known to slip into a pair of mens 40's trousers on occasion... i replace cufflinks & ties with gloves, handbags & shoes... i also am slightly obsessed with architectural heritage, collect vintage clothing from the 20's through to the early 50's, dress in gorgeous vintage garb every day..... as ephraim tutt noted we are indeed a varied bunch

now we're talking... perhaps we could all work in a pre-duel sojourn on the trans siberian express

this would allow a good two weeks to indulge in the reading of antiquitarian tomes...writing long, poetic and insightful letters with our fountain pens...regular glances at fob-watches...allow the gentlemen to compare their travel shave sets...the easily sunburnt among us would have nothing to fear... a bar, bar-ware & a barman would be traveling with us... as well as the style and glamour of heritage class carriages "modern" technology would be available to us so the chanteuse and i could indulge in some vintage film watching....as well as, naturally, days and days of endless hat-wearing opportunity...

mon dieu! i think we've arrived at a most perfect adventure... except of course of the inevitable spilling of blood which i'm not so sure i wish to be responsible for... couldn't you dears simply fight it out over a bout of marbles?
