I'm having a dilemma at the moment.. I loooove 50s cats eye glasses, and have seen several gorgeous pairs on ebay recently, but my fiance hates them with a passion! He says they remind him of dame edna everidge and he can't get over it. Anyone else have the same problem with the man in their life?

No my husband has only hated some of my ultra pointed ones as I have accidently poked him in the eye. I find many men think more sexy libarian then Dame Edna. I would just get what you want and he will adjust.

When my boyfriend and I first started dating, one night out of a clear blue sky he said to me, "Those glasses aren't working for me." I was devastated. Where did that come from? We were out for the evening, what was I supposed to do? I maintained my outward calm and said, "Lots of people like them." But for the rest of the night, I felt like the little girl who was made fun of in class and I just wanted to keep my head down. Taking my glasses off was NOT an option because I couldn't see a thing without my specs! Fast forward 10-years and we're still together. He not only likes my many styles of glasses, he has embraced bolder eyewear for himself, including vintage!

If you have to wear glasses, then I say go for it and wear the pairs you love and that make you feel good. It's hard if your mate doesn't like them - I mean, he has to look at you and when you look at him, you shouldn't see any disfavor looking back at you. A good man will love the entire style of his beautiful, 4-eyed woman.

Since I'm guessing you aren't planning to pair them with a purple rinse perm, then you are just going to be the same gorgeous you, in vintage glasses! Just get a less pointy pair - dead mens spex has some lovely, slightly subtler ones at the moment

My husband has never said anything about any of my glasses. Frankly, I'd tell him to kiss my you-know-what in not so polite terms. As someone who started wearing when she was 9 years old, I have spent too much energy caring what other people thought of my glasses. I have to wear them everyday and I'm the one who will have to look in the mirror for the next few years. Here's a word of wisdom, I hate my current glasses. I hate looking at my reflection because of it. I broke my glasses and had to get new ones immediately, meaning I couldn't wait on a mailorder vintage frame. The eyeglass shop only carried the currently trendy squarish shape frames. Not a single rounded pair in the whole shop. Even if I liked them, they don't suit my face but I didn't have a choice. Now that the emergency need is over, I'm saving up for new glasses.

thank you ladies for your responses! I have tended to just get annoyed when he doesn't "get" how amazing a particular vintage thing is, in fact that tends to be my stock response; a sulky "you just don't get it!" . He likes most things and loves my style in general though, so it's not an issue most of the time! But the cats eyes just seems to be a no-go area. I'm debating getting some anyway though, because I love them! He does really like the 40s rounded styles, I just don't love them as much, and think they might not work on my big ol' round face! (and my mostly 50s wardrobe!)

I wear contacts mostly, and have a pair of glasses I occasionally wear. They're meh, I loved them at the time I got them but after a few months I realized they were horrible for my round face. I'd love to get a pair of vintage glasses but how does one go about using a pair not bought at the eye doctor? Do you just bring the frames in and they make lenses for them? Is it extra money that way?

I had a local optometrist order them in as I saw them on the ray ban website and fell in love.

As of this last eye exam, I can no longer wear contacts (no more fx fun this autumn) due to an annoying new combo of myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Now I have to adjust to "progressive" bifocals.
The good news is that Ray-Ban is reissuing some of it's 1940s style frames! Before you ask, yes I did -- shades and regular eyeglasses. I'm tired of putting new lenses in vintage frames, only to have them fall apart.
