Either this thread is going round in circles, or I've lost the plot. Some postings encourage debate, others get a little near the knuckle, then, as is the climate of this forum, they back off before a spat develops, only to post yet another argument for debate. It's probably me that's lost the plot.

Those of us who've been around here a long time will remember about nine years ago the issue of gabby/bloggy/irrelevant posting was very prominent around the Lounge, and those of the staff who tried to keep things On Topic were widely derided as fascist fuddy-duddies out to spoil everybody's fun. The result was an actual schism, where a segment of the membership split off to start a forum of their own, which died out within a few months. We got very hard boiled in moderating for a while after that, trying to get "back to basics," but the question has to arise as to exactly what the "basics" are.

The Lounge of today is not the Lounge of nine years ago, both for better and for worse, and the way we approached moderating the place nine years ago wouldn't last ten minutes today. Even a forum focused on aspects of the past has to evolve with the membership, or it won't survive. If the majority of members who participate here are the gabby chit-chatty type that's what the forum will be. If, on the other hand, the forum is dominated by a joyless collection of what our British friends are pleased to call "anoraks," then that's what the forum will be. Or, most likely, the place will be a mix of both. Nobody will find the place to their taste in every possible way, but everybody with an interest some aspect of what's discussed here will likely to find something they can enjoy.

One thing we won't stand for, though, is individual stalking or harassment of any member. If someone goes on a rampage following a member around from thread to thread posting harassing comments, they can count on the bum's rush. Any member who feels so targeted, please tip off the relevant bartender.

I've not noticed a problem with people posting too much in the hat forum. As TonyB mentioned, the originator of this thread posts as much as anyone and more than most. Not a problem for me at all.

If I have an issue it's with quoting so many photos. I don't know if the forum software or Tapatalk is to blame, but if someone post 6 photos, they are repeated in the post. When someone quotes the post, all these images are posted again and again.

Lots of scrolling.

Cheers!

David, I simply think the OP was trying to convey the "quality over quantity" thought. It's not the first time someone has suggested in the WHAYWT that one not quote every hat photo in their respose. Most will get the "nice hat" response in regards to what they posted without having to scroll through the photos over and over. A lot has been said here about ones length of membership relative to their number of posts. I feel it has much more to do with how much time one spends here rather than length of membership. It's obvious some are held in disdain by others because they are relative newcomers. I felt and knew it when I first joined a couple of years ago. It's a rather small fraternity and some of that is to be expected as one "learns their way around." I had several opportunities to be offended and move along but due to you and others like you, I chose to stick around. Glad I did.

Disdain might be a bit harsh, but the gist of what you say is right. Internet or real life, there's a time scale of getting to know someone, the new member wins trust and gradually becomes 'accepted.' Before that happens it can feel as though there's a clique, it's not so of course, but it can be felt as such.

As someone who posts often and, sometimes, long posts, I try very hard to not be a bore. I work to make almost every post relevant to the thread and (again) try to make my longer ones thoughtful with (hopefully) interesting information or observations. That said, I'm sure there are plenty of members who just skip over my posts; hence, other than a little scrolling, how much harm is there?

To be sure, truly disrupted behavior or insanely long and irrelevant posts could be an issue, but I can only think of one or two member who even approach this behavior. As Lizzie articulated in several of her excellent posts above in this thread, the general approach / culture of Fedora seems to be one of congenial conversation - which wanders a bunch - and respectfulness of others. I view this forum as a digital version of water-cooler talk for those with a common interest (almost anything relevant to the '20s - '60s, and can stretch further). Sometimes, it's very focused on that common interest, sometimes it's just sharing about your life and learning about others' lives - overall, seems to work well.

At the risk of sounding sycophantic, I very much enjoy reading your input. New York is on the bucket list to visit but is, as yet, unrealised.
However, there's something about your posts that, for me, being a Londoner, can relate too. Big city empathy maybe.

The main criticism of my writing where I work is that I am too "terse". Maybe that is a strength here! I for one enjoy the way conversations meander about. It is to this forum like improvisation is to jazz.

Eh, I often post long posts. If people don't like it, they are welcome to scroll past and ignore my wisdom. ;)

At one point I posted a lot more here, and in many ways in some of my darkest days when I was ill or bedridden this was my only daily adult human interaction, besides medical staff (when i was lucky or unlucky, depending on how you look at it). And shocker, people were kind, this being a kind place.

You have no idea what a person is going through, what they are dealing with, and what resources they have in the non-virtual world. The story (which I've shared on this forum) is one day I let a woman go ahead of me (she was right behind me) in line at a craft store. She had been agitated and so I offered, she burst out crying and said, "you have no idea how much I needed that. Thank you."

No idea what she was dealing with, but when you break down in tears in a store over skipping the line... that's likely something major. And it took me all of 3 minutes to reassure her she wasn't alone.

Indeed, loneliness is the lot of many people, it's something I always try to bear in mind when a long winded post could easily be more precise. The only kind of forum we had pre-internet days was the pen-pal, (thinking back, I bet my letters went on and on,) but pen-pals were one to one and you could build up a profile in your head as well as send one another photos.

And it's always possible that some of those oddly-worded lengthy messages might in fact be encoded communications of some kind intended for hidden observers. Or they might contain acrostics or other concealed information. Either way one might enjoy hours of extra fun parsing messages for such content if one was so inclined. Maybe a day ends, you're outside under lousy occupation of kumquats.
