Nutty Neighbors

The two women who live in the house next to mine are blind. The other day, one of them mowed the bushes--yes, bushes, with 1/2" limbs--on my property, several feet over the line. Their yard? Nothing but weeds. It used to look like a park a few owners ago.shakeshead

This weekend, the line will be demarcated with bricks.

The faint whiff of classism that she brought to the conflict humbled the zealous couple. They didn't want to be thought of as looking down on a poor couple of graduate students trying to make ends meet. So they stopped calling the coppers after that on our car.

So no need to take a nasty revenge ... THIS TIME.

If your neighbors were of a better class (economically), they'd have assumed it was a servant's car.

Blind people operating lawnmowers. That just about takes the cake. Dangerous, too. Can't they pay some kid $7 an hour for a few hours to clear the crud, and then an hour a week after that for maintenance?

Not quite in that class, no. They are comfortable and their houses are worth a lot, but none of their houses are big enough to accomodate servants, and none of these people have enough income for that either -- they are simply sitting on valuable real estate, but on this street there are no grand estates, if you understand me -- just regular houses that would be worth $61,000 somewhere else, but are worth $900,000 because of the view and the desirability of the neighborhood.

It would take more than a few hours. They're on a large lot--ideal for a couple of blind women who rarely have houseguests and only go outside to mow the weeds, and can't see that their place looks like a dump.

I would think such snooty people would have a cleaning lady and a gardener come in now and then. No? They scrub their own toilets and pull their own weeds?

Kidding aside, they should have looked to see whether the car was moved a little every day, the tires were inflated and the tags were current.

I have a neighbor who used to volunteer to mow our lawn when my grandpa owned the place, and then tried to claim adverse posession. He planted his hostas around all the trees on our property that were close to his place, put a fence 10 feet onto our land, etc, etc. It was a major legal battle.

Wow, Paul, thanks for resurrecting this thread.

I may have mentioned this two years ago when I last saw the thread, but just in case I didn't:

Berkeley neighbors can be annoying. Everyone is a wealthy highly educated busybody Baby Boomer wearing hideous tie dyes, Birkenstocks, and straggly beards even though they have plenty of money and can afford a barber, who feels it is imperative to tell you what you should believe. They are mainly very far left politically but some have a few odd rightist political quirks. They are deeply involved in the City Council, which is fine, but a bit annoying -- they want to exercise their political voice on every possible issue, big and tiny. They have a Mission and they cannot leave other people alone.

The street where we rent (Lincsong and James Powers have seen it) is quite nice, tree-filled, lots of deer, beautiful views. No apartment buildings at all and a very high rate of ownership. A desirable place to live. The problem is, all the 64 year olds on the block are so very careful about crime that they overreact at the hint of it. Before we got our black Scion XB, we happened to have a very crappy little red 1980s Nissan Sentra that we got for $500. THREE TIMES, the neighbors called the city to tow it because they thought it was an abandoned car and they couldn't be bothered to ask around to see if anyone knew whose car it was. Luckily the City only put a notice on the car, rather than towing it. I found out who the overzealous police-caller was, and came very close to going over to their house and having a most unpleasant (and possibly illegal) confrontation. (I suspect that if that confrontation had occurred, the cops would have been called as well.)

Luckily I had an exchange with the woman of the neighborhood who acts as a communication broker for the street, and she had a politer word with the offending couple, saying that the Nissan Sentra was, yes, our car, and that the reason why we had such a crappy car is because we were both graduate students who couldn't afford a better one. The faint whiff of classism that she brought to the conflict humbled the zealous couple. They didn't want to be thought of as looking down on a poor couple of graduate students trying to make ends meet. So they stopped calling the coppers after that on our car.

In Berkeley? Classism?lol I'm shocked:eusa_doh:

Over in this little town there's a section that is over populated with the types that Doran speaks of, these elitist are so hypocritical they actually had to audacity to prevent a Grocery Outlet store from moving into an abandoned grocery store. Their reasoning? Well they didn't want the type of people the store would attract? So the store has remained empty for over 5 years. IDIOTS. Stores move where their customers live, not vice versa.

Holy....wow. This is almost a scene I would expect to see in a Ben Stiller movie or something.

Oh, great, a would-be sniper... remind me never to play "The Assassination Game" with you! lol

Lol you would sorely lose. I'm not that bad... I was just raised around guns...and I've loved blowing things up. Lol I remember when I first discovered the avocados were missing I took a board and drove nails through it...and I put it at the top of the wall where you could tell someone was climbing over and I camouflaged it with the vines on the wall...then if they made it past that I had a trip wire set with a couple air horns and an old car alarm and airbag I found in the garage...I made it high enough so an animal wouldn't trigger it so about upper mid shin. Good times.
