Well, I was outside for many hours today, so I wore my campaign hat to keep the sun off, in spite of the fact that it gives me a headache due to the stiff brim and sweatband. And I wore it at a tilt that would have made even AbbaDatDeHat proud. ;)

Total tally for the day was as follows:
Number of coworkers who gave me crap for wearing it= 5+
Number of women who complimented me in it= 1
Number of 10-year-old boys who asked if they could try it on= 1

By my math, I'd say it was an all around success... :D

From a couple days ago. Here's my new M1889 campaign hat. I think I just found my new "go-to" hat for hiking in the mountains.

I agree, that's a great looking hat. Of course I'm partial to campaign hats...

I especially like this one, as I believe it looks exactly like the one my great uncle Malcolm Jimerson had in the Spanish American War. I grew up hearing stories about Malcolm from my grandmother. Malcolm was her only brother and he died in 1898 duringt War. His death was a tremendous hardship on the family and my grandmother, who lived to be 101, grieved for her brother till her final days. So, in short, that's why this hat is so special to me.

Hi, I looked at those, but I wear a 7 1/4 or 7 3/8 extra long oval so hats that fit me front to back have a gap at the sides. I have a little WPG equipment for shooting Spanish-American War Matches.

Reviving an old thread here. I won a campaign hat in an auction. Wanted some opinions. It’s a Stetson Official Boy Scout hat. It’s seen some love from someone in Idaho. See pictures. Found it odd that the brim is 2.5 inches. Judging by the crown height really meant as a boys hat. Check out the punch vents on the sides and back.

I was feeling the sweat and it’s really dry, in fact it ripped a touch when I tried to flip it. So, I want to give it a gas bath, but I don’t think the sweat will survive. What are your thoughts? I reworked the crease on my M1899-1902 Campaign Hat conversion project. I based this particular crease off of some old photos I saw from the era. I've got the sweat band installed and I touched up the finish a little bit to give it more of a velvety suede feel. I still want to shape the brim and I'm looking over a few old pictures to see how I want to do that. I'm also looking at some venting patterns to punch into the hat. It's going to be an ongoing project until I can get a few more things together. Here's what I have so far...

I'm going with a crease that's similar to what this reenactor is wearing and from what I saw in some old photos from the era.

Still gotta ways to go.

This hat that I'm converting is a Resistol Western, btw...

Hi

This may help you a little:
https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/snowflake-star-vent-hole-template.82749/

I'd love to know how he kept those so straight, but those were cut on the BRIM, not the crown. Different and more difficult shape.

Thanks buddy. I saw that. Definitely some interesting stuff he created. I've got a couple of patterns I'm working on that I saw in vintage photos of these hats. One is a simple star pattern and the other one I like is something of a snowflake pattern. I have an idea, that I'll try on an "experiment hat", on how to get the holes into the felt. Another step I'll be working on later is sewing on the three rows of brim stitching, and figuring out how close together the rows have to be.

Appears to be 1/8” on this 2 row Stetson Nutria Quality. Circa early 60s i believe.
