Notched lapel "pin" or corner? Please help me find right term for search and images

An older gentleman of refined tasted had a unique metallic corner on his notch lapel jacket (I believe tuxedo jacket). I believe they were in pairs; one on each lapel, right and left. He has long since disappeared from my circle to contact, but I always admired (and would like to find) a (set) of these . I believe the were pins, with a retainer clasp, but ??? They were triangular shaped and seemed to be exactly fitted to the corner, as if they were crimped onto it (but not visibly showing any crimp).

I have never seen them on anyone anywhere, before or after.

Does anyone know what they were called and if they are made any longer. The dapper Italian man was in his mid 80's last time I saw him. (And a very fine ballroom dancer, as I am)

Thanks for the help in advance.

I believe they're called "collar tips" and usually popular with cowboys. Never heard of them on lapels, though. But I like the idea.

Thanks Jay,
Similar look. But these were specifically on the coat lapel (vs shirt)
He could have"repurposed" them, but unlikely.
He was the kind of person that it had to be EXACTLY correct.

I will at least start the search with that ;0)

If anyone else know more, please post too.

Thanks again,
Bryan

I did find one image on another board with that, and it was referred to as an "embellished jacket"
This one was a very military look with a 5 or 6 buttons, very 90's.
Desription was "Gianni Versace Vintage Jacket Black Tux? 90s?"
(Pardon me - I am new here, can I post a link to another newsgroup thread, not Fedora lounge?, that shows photos)
The jacket I was referring to though was a 1 or 2 buttom classic notch collar tux coat, I believe.
If I am wrong, it was a smoking jacket (not shawl lapel). I believe it was a cabernet color, and the embellishment was a very refined and patina'd (antique) bronze.

Hmmm. I think this would tend to reenforce the old saying, "fashion is fleeting but style endures." Meaning no disrespect you your friend, but "collar tips" sound like the sort of "look at me" embellishment lounge lizards would employ to attract giddy ladies of a certain age -- who should know better.

The only reference I can offer is having poured over catalogs and old photos, and I've not seen anything like this. There are other Loungers, no doubt, that may have more experience in such matters.

So do the collar tips, for all other purposes, appear correct? I mean to say, if you were to "repurpose" the collar tips and slap them on a jacket, they would look similar to your friend's? It would seem that's specifically what your friend has done.

I realize you've noted that your friend would only apply such things to be exactly correct. Let me point out that a notch lapel dinner jacket wouldn't exactly be "correct" per se, and should instead be a single button shawl or peak lapel (for starters).

Moreover, such embellishments as lapel tips would most definitely not be correct to evening wear; i.e. evening wear is specifically uniform. Thus, the evidence presented would suggest your friend was using collar tips, or something of that nature, repurposed to his jacket.

Now if we're discussing cocktail attire, the notch lapel navy suit might appear to be an evening jacket without the satin facing. Even then, I've certainly never heard of anything used to glam up the lapel, besides maybe a large lapel pin.

You know what is confusing for me? Notch lapels don't have real "points" where I could imagine the metallic corners. Do you mean peak lapels? This would be more "classic" too

Notched lapel pin or or "corner"

Thanks for the responses and suggestions so far.

They were apparent, but quietly understated . Antique bronze I think.
About 1 inch square in size, but triangular in shape.
They definitely weren't garish as many collar tips.

Yes, they might have been uniform wear . If it wasn't tux (I don't remember specifically a grossgrain or satin lapel or edge)
Similar to what you would see on a 5 star hotel concierge. (didn't have Les Clefs d'Or symbol)
Definitely NOT a lapel pin. (think it was on both left and right lapels)

The lapels were notch that I remember. If I was mistaken, they would have been a quiet and small peak. Nothing like many are (70's ;0)) Max with would be 2-2 1/2 in? (not 4 in)
I have 38 tux and tail coats, so am pretty familiar with notch, peak and shawl. (I have all 3). I even have some European coats; Austrian trachten ware (think Ocktoberfest) and some military tuxes and uniform coats (band and hospitality). (I teach and perform in swing, Latin and ballroom dance. So they get used. I refer to them as "performance clothing". Tuxes are my "uniforms".

I knew him as an ardent ballroom dancer. I know he had been a dance host on a ship and around the world several times doing this. ...I truly mean "around the world"

Yes, It WAS unusual. Nothing I have seen anywhere before, or since. He wore the jacket 2x in the time I knew him. The jacket was a claret or cabernet color from best memories.

Thanks again for the responses so far.

I vaguely recall seeing this treatment; I just can't remember the particulars. Let me think on it......
