I am curious if anyone here purchased the limited 1/2 sole "collab" variant of Nick's heritage tanker boots, and, if so, what are your thoughts on them? I'm trying to decide if I should hold out for an EUC pair to show up on the secondary market or just order new from Nick's but with a different sole option. Also, I would be especially appreciative of any pictures of them being worn, as I have yet to find any showing what they actually look like once the shaft is covered by pants/jeans. Thanks!

I’m stilling waiting on my pair; ordered April 17th last year. 3 months ago they were delivered with the wrong specifications; 10 inch shaft instead of 8. They were too goth looking at 10inch lmao. Im getting so impatient

I do know that their last shipment of black cxl had to be returned and they're still waiting on restock. The woman I spoke with today didn't say what was wrong with the leather, only that it did not meet their specs.

Thanks! Pics are a big help. They’ve been taunting me with a pair in my size in the ready-to-ship section that isn’t actually available and they’re not making more. Might just have to order with the Vibram soles

Hey man, I've been wearing mine for the last year or so and would be happy to pass along some photos of them. Currently I'm working with Nicks on our latest collab (an engineer boot) but these tankers were really something special.

I ended up ordering some but with the Vibram 430. Just couldn't talk them into breaking their limit of 100 made :)

Yeah, thats the unfortunate nature of collaborations. They bought all the remaining stock they could find of the Cats Paw heels and they simply dont make them any more. Enjoy!

So, I'm kicking this thread back open, and hijacking it a bit as well, as it appears to be the only existing thread dedicated to Nick's Tanker boots - that are not a for sale thread.

A bit of back story, I saw these boots pop up in Nick's website and immediately through - "what purpose could those boots possibly serve?" The straps made no sense to me whatsoever; particularly on a boot that is essentially a lightly modified lace up boot that has no provision for laces. So, note to self, keep an eye on there for a pair secondhand to try out, if this would ever come up.

In fact, this occurred, while I do not need a size 13, these are a B width and appeared virtually un-worn. I discussed them a bit with the seller, as they have a thin green Vibram sole applique over the leather soles that this specific pair of Tanker's was built with. These were added by his local cobbler, not 100% sure why he didn't just specific Quabaug heels and mini-Vibram soles right out of the gate with Nicks. Regardless, for a try - out these are proving to be some pretty wonderful boots.

As the photos show, these are the slightly darker than average Cordovan Wickett & Craig leather, quite similar but slightly darker than Color #8 out of Horween. The hardware is brass. It takes some real concentration the first several times you put these on to get them strapped on just right. However, once they are on, these are quite comfortable. They do relieve a good bit of the pressure that can sometimes occur in the upper metatarsal region of the foot with the traditional lace up and especially lace to toe models of PNW boots. I have found only light heel slip, which is what you would want in a boot such as this.

So what do they look like? ...

In the sunlight, these appear even a bit brighter red than they really are. I have worn these both to church and in walk in the neighborhood to test them out. I do not think these will be hiking boots for me, more keeping them nice for slightly more dressy occasions.

However, that is not at all where these boots originated...

As this linked article suggests, these boots do not have the ankle support that laced up boots would - hence if you are doing a significant land mission and had to travel miles in the woods with a pack, these boots will not be as supportive. I 100% agree. While comfortable and fairly easy to get on and off, while you do not have traditional laces to get on and off, you still have to deal with the straps themselves, which this pair lacks a place to really put the upper strap once it's cinched down tight. Due to having the pull-on loop at the back, I usually apply the strap there, but that will not keep it secured for long. There is not space in the stitched-on strap holding fittings on the sides to apply the extra strap there (think beltloops on your jeans).

So overall, these boots represent a compromise, and maybe one you should consider quite closely before investing in a pair. Just be aware of these points as a quick summary:

These boots are -
- Stylish and fairly comfortable once properly on your feet
- Not something you will see everyday
- Well built in the Pacific North-West
- Can relieve pressure to a degree on your upper foot area
- Still have a great arch support & all leather construction
- Could work well if operating a tank, or heavy equipment where laces could get caught

I would not suggest these if you -
- Need to hike long distance
- Need extreme ankle & foot support
- Have any concerns with the non cut - boot tongue (it bunches up under the straps to a degree).
- Need a very wide or very narrow boot
- Need a waterproof boot
- Need a dedicated work boot

Overall these Nicks are a solid boot, I just need to try and get a firmer grasp upon the use case for them. I like them so far, but I do not know if they are practical enough for me to keep around long term. Time will tell.

Here they are on my feet...
