YETI said:Amidst this recession, I find it rather ironic that a depression era 8-panel newsboy/gatsby cap would fetch such a staggering price. [huh] http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=320356081684
The reason? Flecked newsboy caps (with bucked strap!) from the 1920s and '30s are desired by the Japanese and are very, very rare -- and rarer still in such fine condition -- and rarest of all in a large size. Hence the price.
Doesn't surprise me at all. Before the recession, caps just like this one sometimes went for about $600 on eBay. That's right: six smackers.
Remember, too, that no retail makers of caps today have succeeded in accurately reproducing the silhouette of the old ones.
