I like everything about it except for the sad droop at the side. It all but cries out for Viagra.

Hello, Carter, and Pat H:

I'll try to answer both of your questions in the same post. Carter first:
The blue newsie is shown with an Aero Bootlegger in the stiffest steerhide I've ever seen. You can find a couple other pics in the thread, "Washing an Aero?".

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=36685

The gray newsie is worn with an Aero A-1, featured in the last couple of pages of "Everything A-1".

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=1594&page=14
Both are in the Outerwear thread. Hope that helps.

Now, Pat H: To get the right size, I used a cloth tape (as per HatPeople instructions) around the fullest part of my head and sent that as my size to them. It worked. Twice, so far. :)

That's what I did too, and it came out at about my regular hat size in inches, but for some reason, it just didn't come out right.

I should have contacted them at the time, but didn't.

Pat, I spoke with Carol at HatPeople this morning. She is extremely friendly and accomodating. I think you should contact her and explain the problem with your hat.

I should do that. Everyone speaks highly of their hats, so it's quite likely the mistake was on my end.

Anyone know if the name "Gatsby", in reference to these caps, came about through The Great Gatsby?

Sort of a cool look.

It does.

I'd be curious as to what the original name actually was. Gatsby is from The Great Gatsby, and is likely from the film version of that work, just like what used to be a "pinch" cowboy hat became the "Gus" after Lonesome Dove. Newsboy is because newsboys wore them, of course. Hat People calls them "touring caps", but I've never thought that "touring caps" had panels. I've seen them referred to as "panel caps" due to the panels. And I've seen them called "Big Apples" due to some association with New York City, even though they were worn everywhere at one time.

Finally got my Hat People Extra Full cut

Just for comparison, here is the "full cut" and the "extra full cut." I was very disappointed in the "full one." I'm quite happy with the bigger one...although it is so large I'm still trying to figure out if it looks right on me. I feel like a mushroom. I welcome any tips on comfortably sporting something this big on your head.

Hi Tracyam,

I had my own misgivings about the "Full cut" HatPeople cap, and eventually I ordered the "Extra Full". Your photos confirm I did well in NOT ordering the "Full". I mean, this "Full" is not THAT full - which may well suit some people, but I was looking for a voluminous cap.

Now, the "Extra Full" is voluminous. I was unsure at first, too, and, as you, posted some photos in this very thread and asked for advice. The majoritary opinion was positive. Besides that, I have found it is a question of getting used to it.

And you have a fuller face, and a stouter body, than me, so getting used should be easier... ;)

Try it for some days, and if you are unable to feel comfortable, send it back. Although the "Full" is not the answer, I am afraid.

Regards!

Hi Tracyam
I'm still in the research stage of buying my first newsboy cap. I've considered Hat People and a few on Ebay. However..someone did mention a problem with wearing a Hat People cap without the brim snap. Have you found this to be of any concern? BTW..did it take quite awhile to get your order from Hat People?
IMO...the newsboy hats look even better when shaped a bit. Pushed off to one side perhaps curving the brim somewhat. Seems to add a little charactor to the look.
Thanks

Don't sweat it. It looks like you just took that baby out of the box and put it on your head. It will relax with time. Beat it up a bit, and bend that brim in some fashion. You will look great in that x-full cut.

I like the fact that there is no snap on mine. Wouldn't want it, doesn't need it.

I would like to see a size between these two from the HP.

Thanks for the kind words about the extra full cut. I'm really liking it a lot. In response to HoosierDaddy, no I've not had a problem with either Hatpeople caps not having a snap on the bill. I pull them both forward and they don't budge.

I'd like to see a Hatpeople cut somewhere between extra full and full.

No problem for me, neither, because of the lack of snap. The crown stays on place well, and you can play around with it better precisely because there is no snap.

RGraham is right re: your cap needing some wear, including stuffing it into a pocket and the like. It will look much better when you break it in.

Regards!

I think my HP hat is also full, which isn't that full.

My Hanna Hat, on the other hand, is pretty darned full. I pulled it out again the other day, and while it's slightly large now that I need a hair cut, I think part of my problem is that I just can't decide if it suits me. I think it likely does, but the truly full size requires some getting used to if you haven't worn them frequently.

Sure miss my old Pendletons.

I gave my old HP hat to my son.

I like the snap to be there, but on the very rare occasions he sports my HP cap, the lack of a snap doesn't seem to matter.

I just got my Borsalino newsboy cap a couple of days ago and I thought it made me look a bit mushroomy because of my thin face, but it just needs getting used to.
It made me think about the way we wonder if we suit a particular style or not.I don't think people in the golden era thought too much about it.They probably just bought a hat if they wanted it without wondering "does this suit me?"since everyone wore hats anyway.

The jockey's cap would be MUCH bigger than Hatpeople's "medium" cap.

My Hatpeople "deep" cap is about equivalent to the cap on the little boy with the bird.

As I wear this one, I'm kinda thinkin' I'd prefer a fuller cut. Still like this one, though.

Just got off the phone ordering one of these in brown houndstooth!
can't wait!
Thanks dutch

Hi,

I had not posted any photos of the companion cap to my Hat People greenish brown cap. Like that one, this is an Extra Full Cut cap, but in the Grey HB material:

Torpedo, I like that grey herringbone.

I received my black, extra-full cut from the HatPeople today. With the adjustment made in the elastic, this one is just about perfect and the extra-full cut is just what I wanted.

the extra full cuts don't seem to be an actual set measurement each and every time, do they? They all look great but so different to each other to my eye [huh]
