Bought my first Fedora three years ago (Biltmore), have had many compliments over this time and its been a love affair ever since. Recently, I bought my second one (Christy), this may be the start of a collection I'm afraid.

I've been reading the forum here and find it quite interesting and a good place to learn from some pretty knowledgeable posters.

Would anyone care to explain the Blocking process to me and why it is necessary - I could to a net search and read all about it, but, I felt (pun intended) this would be a good way to get involved with the pros on the hat forum.

I cannot answer your question regarding blocking, I am sure someone here will, though. But I can extend a (virtual) hearty handshake & warm welcome to a fresh face! You make the fedora in your avatar look smashing! Is that the Biltmore or the Christys?
Lemme ask you though, why just hats from the Commonwealth counties? The next thing you know you'll have an Akubra on order! We have some pretty good brands here in the States too, eh? Anyway, glad to see you here, cheers! :cheers1:

Welcome Al,
Blocking is just a generic term for stretching the felt over a wooden form and letting it dry with the object of holding that shape. There is a sticky thread above showing the entire hat making process by JW Hats in Salt Lake. Pictures are worth thousands of words. Over time many hats will lose their original shape, wanting to return to the "lump" it started out as, so occasional "re-blocking" is needed to return it to pristine.

Enjoy yourself here Sir!!

That's the Biltmore in the avatar. The Christy is an almost black color, but, not quite black (dark charcoal?), it's a bit more dressy.

As far as the Commonwealth countries, that's just coincidence. Would you share with me some American made brands to look into, I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to hats. I'm new to this hat thing, all I know is that I like to wear them!

Thanks for the welcome.

... for the info on blocking and the welcome. I'll be taking a look at the sticky thread and pictures by JW in Salt Lake.

Thanks again for the very informative response.

Ribbons

Al, after looking at your avatar, you need to get you a good thin ribboned fedora.:D
It would look great on you!

Ribbons - Never gave it a thought; shows how much I know about hats!

My Biltmore ribbon is 1 & 3/8" and on my Christy it's 7/8" wide. What's the skinny on ribbons? Wide, medium, skinny; better, worst or just personal preference.

I'll have to pay more attention to the finer details. Narrower ribbon, eh!?!.

Maybe that was why I found the Christy so damn attractive and didn't know why?? So, I just bought it - couldn't control myself.

Hey! RBH,

My Christy has a thinner ribbon than my Biltmore (I changed the avatar).

Now that I take a more detailed look, I think the thinner ribbon is why I bought (and fell in love with) my Christy when I first saw it, didn't know it then.

I'm learnin' fast! And running around the house, like a fool, unable to take my Chrisy off. Wife thinks I've lost a marble or two!!
