New (to me) Taubers jacket

Hi Everyone,

I picked up this new Taubers jacket yesterday. It is a different style than most Taubers I have seen here, so I wanted to post about it.

There is some detail work around the sleeve ends and pockets. Otherwise, it is a simple design.

One of the things I like best about it is that it is just leather and liner, no insulation. It makes it perfect for wearing in California. It also means I can see some of how the leather is put together inside the jacket.

I think I have seen people date this label to the 1950s? I am really curious to hear what people think…

Thanks! Car coat does sound like the best description for the design. I am used to Taubers jackets for the two-wheeled vehicle types

I just saw another Taubers like this! I have not seen one like this before. Taubers , non motorcycle, jackets are seldom seen. I think during the 60s they expanded their offerings, but these seldom show up. I have seen a couple of other "civilian jackets" but they are scarce.

This looks to be the same jacket in Brown.

The design does look really similar. The collar on mine is a little bit different, but otherwise it is very close. The brown jacket looks to have a quilted liner, too. I was surprised to find the Taubers label near the pocket on my jacket. I am used to finding the label up near the collar. Mine might have been re-lined at some point.

I think they are the same. The brown jacket has the top button closed. That may make the difference. The little I can see of the lining it looks like it could be original.

This label array is fantastic! Do you think there was a progression of labels that he used at different times, or did he mix them up depending on styles? I always assumed the black and orange label was the latest, but don’t have much to base that on.

No leather type label. I also checked the pockets for additional tags or info, but no luck. The leather feels really similar to the untagged pullover shirt I got a few months ago. Lightweight, but substantial with some interesting grain variation. The backside is grey/black (not brown) and suede feeling. The liner is not sewn down at the waist, so the inside face of the jacket is visible.

I found some cool details that I thought were worthy of a close up photo. The top corners of the pockets are reinforced with leather patches on the inside.

I have never had this kind of insight into how a leather jacket gets put together before.

These are the Taubers labels I have. Oldest to newest. Taubers began in 1941. I'm thinking I have an earlier label, but not sure where it is.

No, I don't notice they used labels out of order.

This earliest Nob Hill label is from a jacket with a late 40s zipper

This is the most common label used throughout the 1950s, also dated by 50s zippers.

Note this label is like above without the Horsehide tag. This one also has tag attached to the bottom. Perhaps a size tag?

I found this label on a jacket for sale in Japan that had a 70s look.

I assume this is their last label? Taubers was producing jackets in 1984 so I'm not sure if any more labels exist.

I just bought this one. It showed up when you were posting this thread. Had to try it out. This will be fun!

I am looking forward to hearing what you think of yours. I am enjoying mine as I wear it more. I will be interested to hear if yours is insulated (mine is not). I am also really curious about your thoughts on what type of leather it is made from. I cannot shake the feeling that it is cabretta. The inside pic I posted earlier is interesting because it looks like the maker used small pieces of a stronger leather to reinforce the pocket corners.

Just came in from California. The leather and the style reminds me of many late 60s-70s jackets. The Grais brands come to mind. I think it is a thin cowhide. The quilt lining is also in the sleeves, so it has some warmth to it. Curious jacket by Taubers. Their attempt to stay relevant in the market that had moved from heavy leather.

It is probably a size 44. Nothing fancy. a piece of Taubers long history.

Here is a Taubers comparison. I see very few "civilian" jackets by Taubers. This half-belt is the only olders civilian model I have seen. They date to around 1950. The Trucker is another civilian, probably 70s. The Trucker is a heavier leather, but very 70s in look and feel.

This half-belt is one of the Best jackets I own. Deep Rich Horsehide. Times, Taste, Style change.

This new one is looking around late 60s early 70s in leather and style. This dates this labels use. The labels is a beautiful script, but looks like 1940s! not 1969. It is the earlier label with out the horsehide. This must have been the end of horsehide for Taubers. I don't recall that marked their leather after horsehide.

I don't recall this use of the Taubers label. Odd look for a "modern" jacket.
