What a slow website!

Well, according to the chaps that run my favourite little vintage shop the 70's are back with a vengeance. proper 70's not the comedy gold lame flares and afro wig style stuff.

so it looks like the beautiful Milla is right on the money.

I have a very  reaction to the commercial too. To me, they're hawking their product, and thought "omg hey, let's throw in the words "vintage, 1930's, 1970's, art nouveau" in a jumble, and that'll sell because it's "hip" right now!"

The clothes aren't bad, but the whole thing just screams trendiness, and I've just never been able to stomach that. I love to see people who appreciate the style of past fashion for their own personal, developed reasons, not just because it's the "latest thing". Maybe I'm just a sour grape though.

I think the line is pretty in a very girly kind of way, but devoid of anything new and interesting. Which might sound kind of "well, duh!!" when said about modern mall fashion :p but what I mean is that these do not look like 70s (or art nouveau lol )-inspired clothes to me but rather almost direct copies of a bunch of vintage dresses to be found in droves on eBay. I don't really feel like they have put much of their own spin on the looks they were supposedly inspired by. And these two are purportedly a little higher end designers, so higher standards should apply to them (even when designing for Target) than to regular high street "inspired-by" looks.

This commercial has been playing for about a month here non stop and it makes me chilly!! All above reasons are absolutely correct. This commercial makes no sense.
I love how they say they get their inspiration from "1930's flowers". Well what do ya know, there were flowers in the 1930's that were specific to that era!! hmph!!! Yeah I'm really looking for an nouveau deco hippie inspired trapeze dress!! Nothing's more flattering on my figure than a really bold floral print on dress that takes the shape of a potato sack!! Oh, and nothing screams elegant vintage style more than that too.

I'm all for modern clothing. I wear it just about every day. I just put my own twist on it, and we've been really lucky that over the past 3 years vintage inspired has been easier to come by. I mean, there's a plethora of it, from large dress houses to small DIY gals on etsy making adorable dresses. But, this Target campaign is trash!! It makes no sense at all. It's funny, what they should be doing is advertising the really cute shirt dresses with the ruffles as their return to vintage style, rather than the trapeze dresses they are trying to sell. There is a reason why they are called trapeze dresses, they should only be worn while flying on a trapeze, in the circus. Even the thinnest of gals look pregnant in these floral sacks. They are so unflattering, and to put some confusing name to them and call them some sort of new vintage revolution is just ridiculous. I also hate that the designers selling the stuff are making it seem like they've discovered something amazing and they are the trend setters. Vintage inspired is old in the world of fashion. They are behind the curve.....

I always pinned the art nouveau revival down to the sixties myself. I think it was Pizza Express that started in the sixties in London and their logo was/is very art nouveau.

First- I would like to point out thaty the Jovovich-Hawk line is not my personal style.

That being said, I would also like to point out that these women are speaking of all of the influences that went into their line. Do they need to be vintage purists to know or recognize a general area in time? No. Maybe they saw a color of a flower from a vintage scan they they liked and sparked a whole line around it. If you try to deconstruct it and take it literal, it will drive you crazy!

Besides, they only have 20 some odd seconds to give an overview of their line to sell to the flyover states. This line is for the general public, not for the majority of the ladies on here. If anything it's cool that the average woman will be exposed to other eras and styles of clothing that may spark in interest into vintage. Think about the first time you discovered it.

I agree with Cheryl, these types of clothes are not flattering at all~ (aw, when's the baby due?) which is why I am not attracted to this line, the 70's feel for it... but I do see brief throwback references to color and pattern.

Keep in mind that at this point in 2008, there are only so many design ideas one can create. They pulled a bit of certain genres to create something modern.

I'm at work and had the sound off, for which I'm glad. I'm a silent film fan, anyways; I got the gist of it.
No, nothing's new including this: designers hate women. Ugly, ugly clothes, shoes, accessories, hair, makeup and poses. And I like the 70s! That ain't just 70s, that's just plain ugly. Take your $28 or $34 plus tax and buy something from the antique shop or online auction. Or an estate sale!
Thanks for posting, retrogirl1941.

I guess I am just really confused about why this is even a blip on the radar of things needing attention in the universe.

Is it because then mentioned the 30's and if they don't do it -right- thats somehow mildly offensive? Do we honestly expect Target to suddenly come out with a line of perfect reproduction dresses that we would all love to wear? And if the did, we would whine how everyone is dressing like us now and ohmigod, they all just don't value vintage...etc.

Would it be better if the clothes they said were inspired by vintage flowers were slutty horrid creations, so we could write all of society off as usual? Instead, while these aren't things most of us would wear, they are a far sight better then muffin topped trousers and skin tight revealing tummy bulge shirts. For mainstream stuff, its fairly pretty. For the price point, its actually super nice.

Lots of stores advertise things I would not buy in ways that I don't like, but its cool because see I wasn't going to be buying it anyhow.

Expecting a mainstream store to be anything but a mainstream store...
