Hi All,

I am a new sign up, but have spent much time visiting, looking at pictures, and gleaning information from posters here at the Lounge.

As far as hats go, I have worn a straw Open Road for a few years now, working outside and walking the dog in summer. In winter it is a heavy watch cap to keep head and ears warm.

However, recently this fall I came across a really beat up Dobbs fedora. While cleaning it up, I became more interested in the hat, as well as vintage hats in general. Whenever I looked online for information, I usually ended up here in the Dobbs Diner reading about hats and seeing what others had.

I have also been looking at berets for some time to cover spring and fall weather, lurking over there trying to decide what I really wanted and how to look for fit, etc.

Anyways, I mainly signed in so I could thank everyone that has posted information, pictures and experiences with their hats. So, THANK YOU from a new Dobbs and beret owner.

Welcome! I have found this to be a great place to learn about hats. It is also a great place to encourage acquisition of more hats. Both are good, I think.

Hey guys,
I would also like to take the chance to introduce myself. Especially because I already got some great help in a posting. <snip>

Welcome, Melkat! I'm new here myself. Our son is a Berliner by way of Portland, Ore., now a permanent resident there and loving it! I visited not too long ago--what a great city!

Hello All:

I have loved hats since my generation snatched them back in the late 60s from JFK who famously went hatless making them suddenly very uncool. Well, I've worn them now for decades. My favorite hatter is Lock & Co London, and I take advantage whenever I'm there. But I also adore a nice Stetson, my favorites being the Open Road and the Stratoliner. I've also been known to buy a Dobbs, and I have grabbed many a fine hat from thrift stores over the years. I have a stash of Cooperstown Ballcaps, before, sadly, they went out of business.

It rains a great deal here in Portland, Ore., so I have to be careful here that my good lids don't get washed out. I have yet to find the absolute perfect yet stylish rain hat, and am still on the hunt.

Glad to have found you. Happy New Year.

Welcome. I’m looking forward to seeing some of your hats. I, too, wish that hats were more commonly worn as they once were, but those hatless folks just don’t know what they are missing.

Welcome! This is a s a great place for hat lovers. Lots of information and a generally nice bunch of people.

Just FYI: JFK was a hat wearer...a Cavanagh man actually. He also wore a top hat at his inauguration. Kennedy gets blamed for a lot of the decline, and he wasn’t perhaps as avid a hat wearer as prior presidents, but hats were in steep decline before he took office.

You’ll find a lot of fellow enthusiasts for your thin ribbon hats...maybe not as many for your ball caps. :)

A long with hats, there are several threads here where we explore the causes of the decline in hat wearing. You can spend a lot of time here and learn a whole lot. I know I have. I used to think that Kennedy didn’t wear hats too.

Hello folks. First time posting, just poppin' into the gallery of hat-wearing chuckleheads.
I've been floating about the site for a year, reading and learning, but wanted to be available to contribute and ask questions.
Im a photographer in Montreal, and have become quite fond of wearing a felt fedora over the last year and half.

My first "real" felt was a Magill made grey fedora I bought at 17, all the way back in '98. My highschool friends and I were into the swing thing back then. Never went full zootsuit, but definitely was wearing mid-century threads picked from grandparents and thrift shops. Needless to say, the hat and swing thing did not graduate highschool with me.

Didn't pick up a brimmed hat until my late thirties when I nabbed a small brim straw crusher I used for travel. It was great in the summer, but it did not survive subsequent rainstorms, so it left me needing a hat that could hold up to the elements. So after sufficient research, much of it here, I've come to own a few Akubra's, and that's where I'm at today.

Hope that's a sufficient intro.

Cheers to any/all folks out there.

Yeah, unfortunately that disorder has been a creeping affliction.

I dipped my toe in the pool with a litefelt in fall 2019. Realized after a month of wearing somethings: Not worth the cost, as a furfelt is nicer and will hold up better (the litefelt shrank)
Akubra was the next logical step, and open crown is better.

I am a big fan of Akubra. They, to me, represent about the best hat for the dollar out there. Not the best by any stretch but great great value....and open crowns are way more fun.

Yes, when I started looking at akubra, the first model that shows up as a starter hat is the Stylemaster. I have one I wore thru out the summer, though I prefer the Fedora due to its softer and shapable felt.

BTW, I read in a few posts you make hats? Have you a shop or gallery in Vancouver? (i grew up there)

Winter aint so bad. ;-)
Especially if you do as the locals and fly to cuba.
There is a special pleasure spending a january day lounging on a beach, sipping havanna club and cola while enjoying an H. Upmann stick.
this year is gonna be, well, not so sunny.

I'd love to see some of your work, btw. By chance, you dont know if any felt out there is named Vancouver Grey? A grey that has the subtlest undertone of sea green and that warm pacific light as diffused thru the clouds? I see that Gannon has something close to that in the bottom right corner...
