Hello everyone,

I’m Mel and this is my first post after buying my first hat. I inherited my love for Westerns from my dad and always wanted a hat but never thought they looked good on me.

This past weekend I was in a vintage haberdashery and happened to luck upon a Stetson hat I really liked the shape of, it was in great condition, and then it fit great. My friends thought it looked good on me as well and were very supportive and verbal in my buying it. I tried on a few others but noticed I was comparing them to the Stetson so I decided to buy it.

I’m posting for two reasons:

1. Is to introduce myself and share my first ever hat purchase.

2. Get some feedback and information about the hat itself if you know anything about it.

The hat didn’t have its own box, though the owner of the store did give me a Stetson box with internal structure to safely store it in, so that was helpful. He said it was likely from the 1970’s and was known as the “Lil John”, fashioned after the character Little John’s hat from Bonanza.

What little research I was able to do, and some reverse image searching, I’ve found some information but am way too new to this topic to know if what I’ve found is accurate.

So far I’ve learned the hat is likely a vintage Stetson Revenger 3X Beaver in the color Acorn (?) from between 1971-1975. It appears to have a gambler/telescope crown with a 3 1/2 inch brim. It has a black sizing tag that shows it’s 7 3/8 and there’s a gold brand on the back of the tag. The lining is white satin with the larger Last Drop image, though there is no plastic covering. The leather sweat band has the company embossed on gold, and has **X Stetson near the front of the hat, though this is more faded. There are no other tags, paper, or writing of any kind under the sweatband.

Any thoughts and/or corrections?

~Mel

Nice looking hat! The telescoping crown is a popular style for lots of folks because it has a shorter crown than some of the other cowboy hat creases, but still leaves plenty of room for your head. I’m a fan of the Stetson 3x beaver Cowboy hats, they definitely hold up well. All the dating and ID info you found sounds spot on. Wear it in good health! And welcome!
