I appreciate the quality and design of certain things that have fallen from the mainstream to being specialty items in a disposable world. I ride a '66 Triumph and thanks in part to this board have just purchased an Aero J106 jacket via Thurston Bros

Hi, everyone! I just joined a couple of weeks ago. I'd been looking at vintage fedoras on eBay, and found a lot of my google searches pointed here. But the story starts a little before that...

I visited Optimo Hats downtown Chicago around Christmastime and fell in love with hats. When I asked how much they wanted for the beautiful hat I was trying on, I almost coughed at the answer. There's no way I was going to squeeze $650 out of the budget.

But feel of the felt and the way a great hat makes me look stayed in my mind, so I knew I'd have to keep my eyes open for a deal on eBay. Last week this paid off, and I'm the proud owner of a vintage hat that looks and feels at least the equal of the hat I tried on at Optimo.

Over on the "Ask a question" thread, I've gotten several prompt and detailed responses to my questions about the vintage of my Knox Comet 4. Likely, it's from 1961 based on several factors, such as the black sweatband, the factory label and an advertisement from the 1961 issue of the New Yorker! How cool is that?

I look forward to finding out more about hats and keeping up with the goings on at the site.

Now, I've always loved old music and movies, but only in the last few years have I been getting into the vintage lifestyle. Luckily, I live in Southern California, where an entire vintage subculture exists. So along with eBay, I've got plenty of shops to choose from. I don't wear a three piece every day and unless it's a special occasion, I won't wear a hat, which from what I've seen is blasphemy around here. I'm still a junior highschool, so I stick to casual wear. Funny thing is my casual wear is still pretty formal for what teenagers in SoCal wear- I've not been seen without a button up on campus in two years. My usual attire is, like I said, a vintage or vintage inspired long sleeve shirt tucked into a pair of 1930s/1940s pants, saddle or spectator shoes, and a pair of tortoiseshell P3 sunglasses or Clubmasters. I'll probably be posting a few of my favorite outifts on the WAYWT thread, but because I'm still in that awkward stage where my wardrobe is half vintage, half vintage looking, it sometimes won't be 100% period accurate.

Greetings everyone,
I've posted several times and I thought I'd tell you a bit about myself. My name is Donna and I live in suburban Detroit. I've long enjoyed treasure hunting at thrift stores and like to incorporate small vintage bits and bobs into my home decor. Naturally, I also noticed the occasional vintage garment, which I couldn't resist buying, too.

I especially love the look of the 40s because those styles make me think of my dear parents. Both were lucky enough to live through WWII in Europe, Dad in Poland and Mom in England. Dad fought as a 16yo boy scout in the 1944 Warsaw uprising, was captured, and spent the last year of the war in a German POW camp. Mom, nine years younger than Dad, was a child evacuee out of London to the English countryside. She remembers the family being "nice" but nevertheless, she tried to run away.

I have vintage garments going back as far as the teens. I concentrate mainly on women's garments and don't know much about men's fashions and how they've evolved so this site has been a wonderful education. Currently, my oldest garment is a women's mustard-yellow silk jersey suffragette suit from the late teens. I don't wear my garments because few would fit, I'm a "tall, healthy girl". But, as with any collector, I just like HAVING them. I justify continuing my collection as a retirement investment... if I ever actually get to retire, I can live off the sale of my vintage!

Hello. Now you are reminding me of my Husband, the stories he tells me about life as a youngster in Southern California, (he grew up after leaving Michigan while a small carpet climber, living in Glendora and eventually Diamond Bar). The he moved around, New York, Europe, St. Croix, and a few other stops along the way.

The hat deal would perhaps create some of your classmates picking on you, and then you'd have to constantly defend your hat from others. That is a given you may want to wait for wearing a Fedora for a few more years. BUT...as you are learning already about vintage....guess what? It really never has totally gone "out of style". And in some ways, it is making a come back lately. Welcome to the Lounge, by the way.

I didn't see this thread until I already started posting, and I even already posted in another introduction thread.

Hello, I am Retro Spectator. I am perhaps one of the youngest members, as at the time of this post, I am 16. I love the 1930's-1940's-1950's, and I dress in retro clothes daily, in fact, I never wear modern clothes. I love to listen to Rock and Roll and Rockabilly, and I play the piano. I don't currently (at the time of this post) own any vintage clothes, except my tie clip. I never wear modern fits, like slim fit, and such. I always wear classic fit and relaxed fit clothes.

I love the late 1940's bold look. I made myself a bold look tie out of old sheets. I always wear a fedora when I leave home, and I also always wear a sport coat. I don't wear the sport coat when I golf though, as it's hard to swing a golf club with a jacket on. However, I always wear my retro clothes, so when I golf, I still wear my fedora, button down shirt, homemade tie, suspenders, and my pleated slacks. When I am home I wear the same thing, but without the hat and fedora. I would never dream of not dressing retro, and nothing would ever stop me from doing so.

I also love spectator shoes. I have two pairs, but one has a toe I am not quite fond of, and the other has a round toe, but unfortunately, has a light colored sole. Both are brown and white, as I always wear khaki/brown colors. The round toe one's white part appears to be made from nubuck, which I am a bit curious about. Did spectator shoes from the 1940's era have nubuck or a similar material for the white part of the upper? Another thing that interests me with new spectator shoes is that they tend to not make conservative/classic ones very much. They tend to make outlandish ones, with odd shapes, or strange colors, or crocodile patterns, or even all mixed together. I wish that they made reproduction spectator shoes that weren't dance shoes. I also often wonder why they don't make spectator shoes with completely white tops, and with only the toe and heel colored, like they often did in the 1930's. Like these ones.

I am very glad I came upon these forums, as I had no idea that there were so many other people like me, who dressed retro, and who loved the 1940's era.

Well hey there everyone I'm WifeyRobinson! I'm a soon-to-be wife, homemaker, domestic goddess, and mother of to from New England USA. About 8 years ago I read the book "fascinating womanhood" and it changed my outlook on life! Then I found vintage and I felt like I finally found myself! My fiancé and I are both HUGE in DE wet shaving and straight razor shaving and slowly I've eased I him into the true vintage lifestyle....or maybe that was the home cooking, drink, and good records on the player :eusa_clap!! Slowly we are working on changing our entire house into a post WWII paradise as my clothing sits somewhere between the Late 40s early 50s. Hope to get to chat with a lot of you, get some good tips, and make a lot of friends.

Hello all,

I am new around here. I've been a fan of all things "vintage" since I was a kid. I am a former detective. My police career came to a close following a back injury. I now teach history at a local community college. When I was a detective I think I was the only one in my area who wore three piece suits and fedoras. Now that I teach history, I am the only professor in my college district who does it. Oh well. I get lots of compliments and it is part of my "persona". I am married to a hot redhead who teaches social studies at a local high school. She can really pull off a nice 40s look when she wants. It is nice that we are both interested in history. Makes for better conversation.
