Interesting musical project you are getting into.
I am a jazz bass player myself, though my repertoire are more into Coltrane and Miles Davies etc.
But I am very fond of the bigband era from the fourties.

I have two suggestions Sarah.....the first one being Julie Londons version of the song called ` Cry my a river ` ...I really love this song so much.
The next suggestion will be `Blue sky` with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra featuring a very young Frank Sinatra.
I am not fully aware if he sings the tune, there are other crooners singing on this double cd.
But Blue sky can be song by you I am shure, nothing in the lyrics demands a man to do the singing.
These were my suggestions Sarah.
I can come up with even more crazy ideas, just give me a litlle time, and good luck with your project

Thankyou very much Alsendk for those suggestions. I'm very excited by the project and can't wait to get the group up and running and perhaps performing at a few tea parties and dances. So far I've arranged "don't sit under the apple tree" by the Andrews Sisters, "Summertime" as sung by Ella Fitzgerald and I've just finished "Chattanooga choo choo" as per the Andrews sisters version.
I'm traveling with work over the next 4 weeks and plan to have my head firmly down to put done more dots together and to work on my image... These damn victory rolls are giving me headaches!! Lol.
Please feel free to let lose your crazy ideas on me, my only problem with male based vocals are the old he,she boy,girl lyric problem. I'm also trying to keep to war time era songs so 39-45ish.

Lurked for a while a few years ago, and am finally signing up - I'm a 20'/30's/40s jazz/swing musician (vocalist/pianist/bandleader) from the central coast of California. My love (obsession?) for the music has spawned an interest in the other styles of the era, particularly 30's clothes. I have a budding collection of dresses for performances, and I'm here hoping to learn more about completing the look, I love playing for swing dances and watching everyone who's decked out. I think I've been faking it ok on everything but the hair, so...off to the beauty section with some questions Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I'm new here, and I have always been interested in elegant way of life, but sadly nowadays it's not easy to see elegant gentlemen or ladies because the modern concept is the erratic confusion between "elegant" and "luxury" -or even "expensive"-.
This is the reason why I always prefered the "vintage era", as a generic name for all past times when all ladies and gentlemen knew the importance of style, good manners and elegance.

I'm very pleased to have discovered this forum full of people with my same point of view, and hope we can share opinions, knowledge and ideas.

I am sad to say I have not introduced myself, even though I have been here for a few.

My name is Justin, and I currently reside in Reno, NV. I am fresh out of highschool with a love for the times between 1920-1959. My current style goal is to achieve a dapper type look, but around here, thats pretty difficult to do, considering the heat, but I adjust.

My main interests are History, the Military (plan on enlisting in the near future), Singing, Vocal Precussion (Beatboxing... my guilty pleasure, if you will), collecting old currency & coinage, building old vehicles, rescuing vintage items from the thrift stores, and spending time with my gal who is afraid to dip into the world of style for fear of riddicule, but she tells me it is pretty awesome how I love it! Shoot, I like to think I was born in the wrong decade!

I am a recent member, but a long time browser of the FL.

Growing up I was an aviation fanatic, and one very eye catching segment of aviation history for a young boy like me was WW2. However, since I was always a student of history, I began to discover more about the people of that period and how they lived.

Since then, I became interested in the clothes, films, music, from the era of about 1920 - 1950ish, and I began to add little elements of it to my life, I use a straight razor, smoke a pipe, wear fedoras in the winter, and generally dress a bit smarter in public.

People have noticed, and it has led to some interesting comments:
My boss saw me come into work with a linen suit and she told me, "You're a 70 year old trapped in a 20 year old's body." I smiled and said, "I was hoping you'd notice that sooner or later."

I told my former roommate, "If you're as young as you feel, I guess that means I am in my fourties." He quipped, "No man, your FROM the 1940s." I had to laugh at that one.

"That reminds me of my grandfather," is something people will say about my hats or my pipe - and it's usually meant in a positive way.

"You look like Amelia Earhart." someone told me when she saw me wearing my A2. "Good, that is exactly the era I was going for." I said.

I don't go too far and dress exactly like a page from a 1938 Sears catalog, but I like the distinctiveness that "golden era" elements add to a look. People know me for "lookin sharp" but in such a way that they don't normally see. Does anyone else get those odd comments that are strangely satisfying??

Now that I live in south east Asia, I can indulge my passion for tailored clothes, perhaps a little too much - but I've gotta say that it's a lot of fun. People in the far east appreciate a smart dresser - and golden era clothing is the epitome of sophistication without being ostentatious.

I understand and share your same point of view, my mother always say "you were born old", due to my interests, very far from the common interests in people of my age.
You are very lucky to be in far asia, it's a very interesting land, full of mistery and adventure with good tailor clothes for cheap price. Also, as you said, asians really appreciate well dressed gentlemen.

Hi Everyone. I’m new here as well. So let me introduce myself. My real name is Sander and I live in the south of the Netherlands. At time of writing 34 years old. I discovered the Fedora Lounge while surfing the internet for information about a fedora hat and found out there was more interesting stuff to read here. The 'Vintage’ way of living appeals to me. And I must admitt it’s not all vintage that is my daily life. But there is a certain living in the past that is important in my life. Not only the Golden Era, but I realize I don’t fit in this modern age, the way people treat eachother without any respect, the fast way of living and the fast media like most television and radio nowadays. I find peace in smoking my pipe, enjoying a good drink and company of good friends. Listening to real music.
Well, enough for now, hope to find lot’s of inspiration here.
