New Hat

Hello Loungers, with my 56 b`day coming up this weekend,my daughter asked me what I wanted.I said I really dont "need" anything but in my time spent looking for another fedora I found a great hat on Miller Hats, its the Douglas in silver belly,WOW nice for 130.00.Thin band and grosgrain edged(if that is correct term),you guys and gals are more familiar with these terms than I,even though I have been wearing a fedora since my grandfather gave me his moose brown Mallory,I have worn that Mallory out, chasing the elusive ruffed grouse in the upland country of NY state. The Borsalino Naples is my first choice but I can`t ask the daughter to spend appx 260.00 on a hat, even though at 26yrs old and still living in the old house and living rent free.Well I guess when she finishes her masters degree and gets a little more cash they she will leave the nest.Sorry for rambling on.Brian.Take a look at the Douglas.

I love the slightly brown color on the ribbon and bound edge ... it sets the hat off nicely. That is a fawn color hat shown, though. When you order silverbelly my guess is you'll get a coordinating grey color ribbon.

I began this reply to say "Have a look at an Akubra Campdraft." It's very similar and here on the lounge we know that Akubras are great hats for the price (you can get the Campdraft for around $110 shipped). It comes open crowned so you'd get the experience of shaping it by hand ...

Either way, great choice!!

Douglas!

I say get the Douglas, it's a terrific looking hat, for some reason I prefer it to the Campdraft. It's on my list (in fawn) right after the Stetson Nostalgia with bound brim comes out. If you get it, I hope you'll post pictures of the silver belly version so we can see the ribbon treatment. Oh, and happy b-day.

The Douglas is Miller/Biltmore's version of the Open Road. I've always liked the look of this lid, but, for some reason, it has never gained much traction here on the Lounge. Please post photos and a review if you get a chance. Enjoy!

Cheers,

Thanks for the great advice.

Fellows: Your advice and knowledge and curtious comments are very much appreciated. In this fast paced and throw away world it is refreshing to a 56yr old guy(not yet guys) to have people that are very much preservationists.I am a person who for most of my life have always looked for difference,in the clothes I wear, the music I play, most everything. But now it is hard to get the "GOOD STUFF" anymore.35 years ago I bought a Browns Beach vest at a local store, this morning in NY state it was 40 deg.I put an old flannel shirt on my khakis and Quoddy camp mocs on and my newly puchased Type IV government issue partners brief(32.00) in Pa antiques store. An was fairly happy.Oh forgot, wound the old American made Hamilton "Lester" and away I went.Just waiting to put on the old 55J14 flight jacket.Cheers folks and happy hunting.Brian....

Welcome to the Lounge, Brian. For what it's worth, I have several Biltmore hats and enjoy them all. You won't be unhappy if the Dougles is your choice. You'll also be supporting the economy here and in Canada. Carter

I don't have a Douglas and I have never bought from Miller Hats, but I do have a Campdraft as well as an Akubra Fed Deluxe IV. I recommend the Akubras based on my experience, but the Douglas I am sure would make you a fine hat too. Whatever you decide on be sure to post some pictures, won't you?

Also, welcome to the lounge. You will enjoy your time here.

Am I understanding this correctly? Are the current Miller Hats made by Biltmore (except the listings that state Stetson as manufacturer)?
