I was using hair wax to shape my hair and had forgot I still had some on my hands while I was shaping my new Barbiso hat. Where I touched the hat it turned orange where I touched it. What should I do? Is my only option to have the hat turned inside out. It did no go through to the inside.

Right now I have hid it in my closet, so I would not think about it. I felt like obliterating the universe with my knuckles.
I'm pretty sure it took the dye out where the wax and gel got on it.

Luckily I have had my vintage fedoras for a few years and they are in great condition.

My new Christy's fedora is coming any day now. Christy's took the extra time to hand sew the ribbon on without any tacks. That should make me one happy man. I will Never be this careless again with my hats.

This thread illustrates the main reason I gave up hair wax.

Well, that and the no hair thing...:D :D :D

Hope it all works out, metro...

Wow! that's really something. Any chemists here care to tell us what happened? Maybe you could just coat the whole hat? But then again, who wants an orange hat? Just kidding. I do feel your pain. Here are two similar fopaux from the Zeti Files. I could share others, but just so you know you're not alone -

1. Beautiful 'new' preowned car. I came straight home and washed it to removed the white For Sale writing. It took some scrubbing, but that accomplished, I then went ahead and washed the whole car. What I didn't know as that the cleaning pad was too abrasive. While the car was wet you couldn't tell as much. When it dried it became painfully obvious. Yep! that's right -

2. Beautiful new Swiss boots. For me an expensive 'luxury' purchase at the time. Well the very first time I wore those lovely new boots I opened a door in such a way that the bottom edge hit the top of my foot and put a deep gash across the top of one of them. I went on to wear them like that for perhaps 15 years.

I have chipped two perfect vintage toecaps by putting the shoe under the door of these melamine office cupboards that seem to have a trailing untrimmed lamina/ razor extending on the underside of the cupboard doors. Putting the shoe underneath...ouch!

What was the brand of hair wax - I want to avoid that one!

I'll add a careless moment of my own -

I had a band new pair of Cole Haan Bragano shoes (I think nicer than the current line, this was almost 20 years ago, and they were over $300 then). Quite an extravagance on a grad student's pay. I was riding an escalator and did not notice that I was too close to the side. Ground all the finish and die off on one side of the back of the shoe. I was heartbroken!

Me too! lol

I am curious to see what the stain looks like and the hair product that caused it.

If I were you, I'd take it out of the closet and try to
brush it off the hat ASAP, to limit the damage. You
said it didn't soak through, so get it off before it does
more harm. Use a stiffer brush than a hat brush (maybe a
suede brush). Find out what's in that hair goo an use a
solvent (rubbing alcohol?) to remove what doesn't brush out.
Depending on the finish on that felt, you might yet save it.

I feel your pain, metropd! A while back I was looking over a pristine natural-color OR-style hat and taking notes for an auction write-up. I was using a fountain pen, and at some point when I turned the hat over it touched the tip of the pen I was holding. The felt instantly sucked up a large amount of blue ink! :eusa_doh: I've tried removing it with the usual ink removers but without success. At some point I may have to try dying it.

Makes me a little nauseated just thinking about it!

Regards,
Tom
