I must disagree with your view on the Shackleton. I don’t expect to wear anything thicker under it than the submariner sweater in the pics, and with that I think the shackleton is just right for my taste.

Absolutely. Your taste is what counts. I commented on the aesthetics: for my taste it’s too snug; for you and others it’s not. I won’t be the one wearing it, so it’s all well.

If you ever consider getting yourself a Shackleton I then suggest you to size up for looser fit. They seem to run very snug. I have a 49” chest and my Shackleton is size 50.

I'd expect them to fit snugly by design, otherwise they would be similar to the old British Army leather jerkin, which is very different than the garment they were based on. The real beauty of the design, imo, is that it doesn't look like just a jacket with the sleeves lopped off.
