New Aero 'Pioneer'

Wow...Way cool..! In one pic..that looks like an inverted pleat..as the back center seam. The hide is also something else. I remember it as an experimental hide that Aero was trying a few months ago. Some variations can look quite 'antiqued'..and more rustic than others. Now ..I too..must buy another damn Aero jacket...and they sure ain't getting any cheaper....

From what I've heard (via the Ironheart forum) Kudu is similar to the oil pull horsehide, but with even more character.

Was colour availability mentioned? I have long had my eye on a second Thirties halfbelt, with some mods, in black, but I could be tempted by one of these instead, if it's not too long...

Yeah, they only show brown. Pity. Looks like a nice hide, but it's a black jacket I "need". Still, I'm sure they could run one up in black FQHH.

I've asked Amanda, and will post the response.

I believe that Aero have a few hides that don't show up on the website. It might be worth asking what odds and ends they've got squirrelled away.

If I got a Pioneer, and I'm very tempted, I'd remove the half belt, and end up with a much simpler back like the one on the six pocket jacket. Though I'd keep the centre pleat and more Western yoke.

Yikes!..Not me on this one..I think the half belt with the stylish 'inverted pleat' makes that jacket.
HD

I'm a sucker for the halfbelt too - it's all the little details of a jacket design from that period that really makes it, in my eye. I like the plainer back on my Highwayman, but that's a very different beast altogether. Still, the great thing about Aero is that they are open to accommodating such variations. My Bootlegger and Thirties Halfbelt both have non-standard variations which are really nice. I'm planning a goatskin Bootlegger with some real deviations from standard in future....

I think the look of a well executed half-belt like this (or the other Aero half-belts) is one of the most exhilarating designs in the world of leather jackets. I have a thing for chest pockets and I do miss that on this one.

I've just had an email off Amanda, and the official word is that there are two types of Kudu:
  • The first lot was heavy, like the FQ horsehide.
  • The second lot is softer, but still thick and supple, more like deerskin.
I saw the Ironheart / Aero deerskin shirt a couple of weeks ago, and that was lovely. If the second batch of Kudu has similar characteristics then it will really be something.

As for colours, it's only available in a single shade that's brown / cordovan. Sorry Edward.

According to that thread linked by Graemsay 1050USD. Apparently the raw materials to make the shirt cost more than those in the FQHH jackets it's stated.

I've got a feeling that the Aero / Ironheart shirts are $1200, not $1050, including postage. But you'd have to have a chat to Giles at Ironheart UK about them.

The deerskin feels like a thick, soft and tough chamois leather. It is really nice in a do you take internal organs way. I'm very tempted by the shirt, and the only thing stopping me is the distinct lack of a job.

Yeah, about right. And deer/elk/bison are great hides. No break in needed. It's not as tear resistant as HH, steer, or pigskin though.
