"Which brings me to another question: what do you guys think of the Stetson Whippet? I've seen it mentioned here and there and think it's a beautiful hat."

By this, do you mean the structure of the basic hat body such as the brim and crown dimensions and quality/color of the felt or do you mean the added items such as edging, sweat band, hat band/ribbon and liner?

The dimensions seem very good, but I have not handled one to know about the feel.

While I like the basic hat body, I was not particularly interested since the ribbon used on the edge binding and band are a bit wider than I prefer for my look. I like the edge binding of the Akubra Campdraft or Stetson Stratoliner best and I like a 1 inch ribbon for the band better than the smaller one that the factory installs. I make a replacement and put it over the existing band. But that is just a very personal choice.

But if a bolder brim edge and hat band are your preference, the Whippet or Stetsonian might be your choice.

The open crown gives you the option of choosing a crease which adjusts the look to your head and body.

I am looking forward to the new Absinthe and Exposition which have a look more along the lines of what I described liking about my Campdrafts.

Have you looked at the Stetson 2015 catalog thread? There is a lot to learn in the catalog and discussion.

There are also special threads devoted to Whippets, Stratoliners and Stetsonians out there in the Hat forums here in FL.

Yup - start clearing out that armoire and saving up...

. . .

Thanks for the feedback. I'm originally from the small town of Abbeville, but moved to the faraway and big city of Lafayette, where I currently reside. The weather here these fast few weeks has been perfect for hat wearing, which has spurred me on to finally make a move on getting an everyday hat. . . .
I lived in Lafayette for three years, 1976-1979. On a trip back from Austin, TX, a few years ago, I detoured off I-10 and drove down into town into the neighborhood where I used to live. It's gotten busier, for sure. Meyer's is only a little over two hours away; you could leave home at 8 am on a Saturday and be at their store by 10:30. (Be aware, if you do, that the city has in its infinite wisdom instituted parking meters on Saturdays as well as M-F.)
