Aaah, pet names...

I have a penchant for tacking simplistic and sometimes painfully descriptive names on everything and everyone (except the family and very close friends, for some reason). In the friends and acquaintances department there's The Big Man, The Old Guy, The Reverend, Brother Lowness, The Sheriff, The Bald Man, Ole Sniffles, The Tough Cream Puff, Pretty Broads number 1 and 2, Igor and the Professor, Miss Purple, The Back Row Cads, L'Artiste Peleé, The Pop Girls, The Kid, and Il Cesare to name a few.

Then there's also the rogues gallery, fiends like The Large Woman, Le Nincompoop, The Human Wasteland, Les Batards Graphiques, The Mister and The Missus, The Misery Trio, The Piglet, The Pole and The Midget, and simply The Rogue.

Wardrobe items and certain objects include The Objectionable Whites and The Objectionable Grays (trousers), The Elders (vintage ties), The Blues (trousers) Drawer Fillers (bad socks), The Book (my journal), The Invalid (fountain pen), The Dailies (certain web-sites), jobs are invariably named The (blank) Project and last but not least, The Machine (computer).

And yes, I do have names for certain loungers (strictly innocuous stuff, don't worry).
Oddly enough, when I'm forced to name or title something, I'm always hard-pressed for an idea...

Let's put it this way, everybody who crosses my path gets tagged with a descriptive "handle" until I know their name--it may end up becoming their name in my eyes, like the assistant editor on the college paper who I renamed "Maggot." (By the end of the year, even our new reporters were referring to him that way, which always brought me a smirk and him a grimace.)

Terms of Endearment

Let me start with what my daddy called me. "Freeda Peanutbutter" so named because when I was four, my dad took me to Olan Mills to get my pictures done, and the photographer asked me if my name was peanutbutter, I got very offended, as most 4 yr olds do when you get their name wrong, so my dad thought it was cute, and just added "Freeda" in front of it, and there on called me his "Freeda Peanutbutter". My sister who is 11 yrs my junior calls me Sissy to this day, shes 22 calling her 33 yr old sister Sissy....
My soon to be ex husband always called me "PITA" for Pain in the ars. I called him smelly pants, or poopoohead, but all in love. And, of course since my real name is Ingrid, I got the lot of it from everyone around. From "Ignerd" to "Ignoramus" and "Ingie" and beyond. Why couldnt my parents name me a normal name like Susie????

My wife's name is Jennifer, and when we first started dating instead of calling her Jen or Jenny, I thought of her name in terms of Jen-ny-fer and ended up using the last syllable, 'Fur' as a nickname, which she loved. Over the years that nickname has expanded to include Fur, The Fur, Furby and even, on occasions, Furball. Even our friends affectionately call Jenny 'The Fur' and one of our closest friends calls her 'Furby'.

She often signs her name on cards 'Jen-e-fur'!

I like the one from Seinfeld: "Schmoopie."

That's basically what we call our dog! Except we've embellished it so it's "Schmoopsie".

I call my boyfriend "Little One", even though he's about 2 times my size! I call my mother "Mommie Dearest" (of course), and my dad calls me "Franseca" in some crazy accent (I have no idea how that came about).

My dad used to call my mum Tu. Which is kinda weird, as my dear black cat was Kishtu, and Tu for short.

For reasons best known, Bertie W. and I are (interchangeably) Bedbug and Scuttlebutt. To be pronounced, "bed-boooooooog!" and "shCUTtlebutt!"

The cat has a thousand and one pet names, but is most usually - Da Pawz. He being a teenaged tom cat and all, and very down with the cats in the hood.

(Pardon me if this makes you gag.....)

The Mister and I have tons of sweet names for one another.

His for me:

Sugar
Sugarbritches (engraved in my wedding band)
Babydoll (hence the user name)
Baby
Love
Lover Girl
Sweetheart
Honey

(amongst many, many, many more that I won't admit to in public)

Mine for him:

Sugarpop (engraved in his wedding band)
Mister
Honey
Baby
Babe
Lover Boy
Dude
Duder
Sugar
Bulldoggie

(again, more... but embarrassing for public consumption)

I had a cat when I was a teenager. Her given name was Anastasia. (We got her from the humane society, and she came with it.) I soon started calling her Piggy because she sounded like a pig when she would wolf down her food.

Mom's current cat came with the name Daisy Duke (her brothers were Bo and Luke ), but she was immediately re-named Sassy - more fitting to her personality. I usually call her Sassafras or Snicklefritz.

Dad's dog is named Deveraux (or as Dad told the vet and is stated on her records Dev-a-roe.) I call her Dever, Devil Dog, Puppy, Pupperoni, and Pretty Girl.

I tend to stick with baby/babe and "luv" for romance.

I call my sister and assorted female friends "sugar" usually.

I call my brother dude, or my protector (which started when he was like five and I was ten) or my hero, or Pennsylvania. "Pennsylvania" is always said in a John Wayne accent and is a way of calling him "kid" and it started out as a sure-fire way to irritate him but now its just a running thing.

He calls me "The Midget" and "Gnome" and stuff for the same reason.

Actually I think my brother may have been six or seven before I started calling him my protector. I remember one time we were walking home from something, it was like two or three miles and at night.

I was kind of nervous about walking in the dark with traffic and past the park and stuff and he knew it, and he looked up at me and grinned and said, "Don't worry, I'll protect you from the dark...and you can protect me from anything that's IN the dark." lol

My great Aunt Leona used to call my great Uncle Cyril "His Nibs" referring to some advertisement that apparently was quite humorous back in the 30's and 40's.

I almost always refer to my significant others by their names but I occasionally call them "bebe" or "sweetie". Nothing too fancy here.

Although, it seems like a century ago, I used to call an old gf my "Raptor". You'd think that would have made her mad but I think she actually liked the nickname.lol

Undertow, funny you should mention 'Leona'.

Hope your great Aunt 'Leona' wasn't this 'Leona'.
Could be a good or bad thing, since she was worth a cool 2.5 billion at the time of her death.
