Your turn!

OK, HadleyH, your turn! Challenge us!
BTW, I suppose it seems normal to you, but it seems so strange to me that as the springtime comes bursting in on us here in the northern hemisphere, for you down there, it's fall! And with a horrendous drought! Is it affecting you at all where you are?

Yes, fall has arrived, but I do like this weather so...
Ok, this is the song to be guessed, the year 1944, famous composer not so famous song:

Now a girl is a babe
And a babe is a chick
And a chick is a bird
And a bird is a fowl
And a fowl is a ball
And a ball is a great big dance,
But a girl ain't a great big dance
...........

I have the feeling nobody will know this one...I really do...[huh] .
Hope I'm wrong :)

No idea. I'm still boggling over the idea that I have an antipodean pen pal, so to speak. As Maynard G. Krebs so frequently said to Dobey Gillis, "What an age we live in, Dobe."
Any hints? Like was it in a show, or who first sang it? 1944, could it be a movie song? Like maybe a Betty Hutton or a Danny Kaye? Groping blindly here.
Hmmm, which reminds me. Not only is it summer there when it's winter here, but it's also night here when it's day there. And up is exactly the opposite direction!
Excuse me while I boggle.

It was a Broadway production, its name "Seven Lively Arts" (1944)
Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter.
Ballet music by Igor Stravinsky.
Book by George Kaufman and Ben Hecht.
...and among the other musical numbers was "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye".

What is the name of the song? :)

For serious vintage lovers...

...of music of the early 1930s of course ...(is there any other??;) )

What's the name of this lovely and very popular tune

You have me spellbound
Bewildered by your charms
Heaven or hellbound
I must be in your arms
tell me, am I only ...

"...Moonstruck, or is this really love?"

Just listened to the Jack Hylton Orch. v/Pat O'Malley version of this today. Those lyrics popped into my head immediately.

I can't stand it! What's next? I don't know any of these but I like this thread.

I'm going to toss one from 1923-24 out there:

"Go get another place to stay.
Don't try to tell me you don't care.
You'll be lookin' so like a polar bear."

Here's a clue. She sang with Fats Waller at one time.

:p I love those British Dance Bands!

I always enjoy reading this thread, even when I don't know the lyrics (usually anything outside of 1928-1935 throws me). I was hoping someone would revive it when I logged in today; and lo and behold here you had posted the lyrics to one of my favorite songs... Perfect timing.

By the way, the Jack Hylton/Pat O'Malley recording is my very favorite too. :)

Here's a clue. She sang with Fats Waller at one time.

The name of the song is, "It's Gonna Be a Cold, Cold Winter".
The artist is Alberta Hunter. She recorded for at least seven decades.

Here's an easy one:

"You marched away and left the town empty as can be
I can't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me"

Well, OK, but just one and I'll make it easy.

"Some like that perfume from Spain,
I'm sure that if I took even one sniff
that would bore me terrifically too.
Yet......"

The singer is one of my all-time favorites. The song ain't bad either.
