A few of the chaps have asked me for a thread. Here it is
The leather is a veg tanned sturdy yet midweight Italian horrsehide that I traded for some black Badalassi I had (I don't care for the squeaking). I got it cos I liked the colour. John told me he liked it too, and that this is good dense Horsehide. He later told me - after finishing the jacket - that it has a naked finish, meaning it will mark very easily and can be expected to darken with wear. I did not know this when I acquired the hides, and my first thought was oh no what have I done! The pics above show what it looks like in bright sunshine. Kind of a burnt orange, which I really dig. But when it comes out of the natural light and goes inside it looks like either a dark caramel, or a light caramel, which are also not unpleasant shades IMO, see below:
If I take a pic with daylight but inside it looks like this:
Heres a few more shots to show the colour in natural light, taken outside.
As for the hide, well, i've had ripe peaches that probably bruised less easy and it seriously would seem to be marking itself overnight! As intimated above, my first thought was oh ***t what have I done but then I quickly came round to a different way of thinking. I have realised that the only thing to do with a leather like this is to get it thrashed asap and I think that's gonna be a lot of fun. It'll definitely be very interesting to see how it reacts to hot bright sunshine (if I can find any) and so I'm gonna be committing to this jacket from now on. This and one other very short one in a different colour, to be settled upon later, will be my only 'wearers' lol. And to wear this one every chance I get is gonna be the plan.
Here's a pic of the type of marks that just appear from nowhere. Has a good few of these on the back too. JC's advice re keeping it clean was to just use water, but I'll only be doing that if it gets discernibly dirty somehow. My instincts are that this hide doesn't like water, but that it probably really likes sunshine.
I'm afraid I've been so absorbed in trying to work out what the colour is that I completely forgot to photo the lining (it's gold rayon), the back, and all the other details. There are two snap inside pockets to mention, which I wouldn't be without. I forget which zip this is, but it's a strong one. I could add some more pics later I guess.
What I'd like to do with this thread is update it periodically to chart the jacket's evolution, assuming the thing is going to darken withwear. Although that said, looking at these marks which are appearing, maybe it'll lighten?? I really couldn't tell you
