Naked Cowhide?

I have a lovely new car coat made of naked cowhide ( a brilliant product by Johnson Leather, sorry no photos). It is very soft and the matt black finish is less obviously dyed and treated than chrome tanned jackets I have had.

Can anyone tell me what the properties of naked cowhide are? Does it resist water like other leather, does it wear as well? Is NC just a fancy term for standard leather?

I've never actually seen them naked. But some of the cowboys ride their steel horses with leather chaps....and nothing on under the chaps.
