My new hobby? MAN (grooming) stuff! From the 50's etc...

I've been out of work lately, so any money I make goes to rather high bills (health insurance, etc).

Lately I've found that shopping the local drug store produces some fun stuff to try out. So far, my finds:

• Wildroot (Wal-Mart): $2.15. Works great and keeps my hair style. Needs to be washed out though. Leading to...

• Brylcreem! $5.45 for "King Size" tube (as labelled on the price tag). Bought at Med-X. This stuff is awesome! Doesn't smell much, goes in hair easy, sets it just right with no gel crunch, and makes your hair soft and healthy! Great stuff, use it every day now.

• Old Spice Cologne: $7.45 (K-Mart) Smells great! I like to wear it on job interviews, as folks might make the emotional connection to their own fathers, and leave a positive association with me.

Next up, Brillantine is on my list. I might check into some more drug store products - I already use Barbasol. Suggestions for more fun man stuff from the 50s?

Can't think of anything else, as I am not a man, but I love Old Spice! Bay Rum cologne actually makes me think of my dad instead of Old Spice, but Old Spice smells heavenly!

I've used Wildroot since I was 16. Buy it at Walgreens these days. I just wish it still came in the large glass bottles, those were great.

Old Spice is disappearing here, as has Californian Poppy, but I found a full jar of 40's Brylcreem for $3 the other day.

Lilac Vegetal

is a very old-fashioned aftershave, probably still available in most drugstores. It smells wonderful, a little lilac undertone but mostly woodsy and manly. Irresistible... in my humble opinion.

Geez, don't let my sister hear you say that, she'll have a hissy fit! Dad used to bathe in it. He used the lime variety, you could smell him all through the house! To this day, none of us siblings can stand it, due to Dad's over-use of it. You should smell neutral in job interviews anyway. Some people simply can't stand the smell of any cologne, and everybody's preference in odors is different. I quit dating a lady because she used some sort of fragrance that (to me) smelled like Lysol or some sort of harsh household cleaner. I did ask once, politely, that she not wear it, she ignored my request.

I once read a comment from a dating advice columnist that men and women should just trade colognes, because men buy and use the type of smells they like, as do women.

Apparently, if you blind test fragrances on men and women, they can't tell the difference between 'men's' and 'women's' perfumes.

I've been using Brylcream for a month or so. I saw it at the drugstore and thought I'd give it a try...and it's pretty darn good stuff.

And there's an old line about Old Spice - not sure if I have it right or not, but something along the lines of "If your grandfather hadn't used it, you might not be here."

How about shaving soap and brushes. VDH Deluxe Shaving soap is still a very good choice [I use it regularly]. Also Clubman Aftershave can still be found at the beauty supply houses, yup, the stuff the barber used when we were kids. Also good old Gillette razors can still be stocked with good blades to give a real shave.
