Hello there, Just joined the forum, but have been a lurker for a while now.

Has anyone compiled a list of "Must have/Must watch Period Movies" that have the styles and fashions from the turn of the Century to the 50's?
I am a big fan of the "Safari" look and Big Game Hunting ,so most of my favourites are the adventure movies, I'll start:
King Solomon's Mines (Stewart Granger,Deborrah kerr),Lawrence of Arabia, Mogambo(Clark Gable Ava Gardner),The Island of Dr.Moreau,
The Indiana Jones movies, The Mummy movies, The Phantom, The Ghost & the Darkness, Hatari (John Wayne, Red Buttons), The Rocketeer, Out of Africa, Born free, Living Free, Van Helsing,The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,King Kong (the latest), African Safari (a real documented safari).:)

Some SciFi movies also that had period clothing: The Fifth Element, Stargate(the movie)

While I just happen to like(for giggles): The Rundown, Romancing the Stone,The Jewel of the Nile, The Anaconda movies, Prey, Jurassic Park movies, Congo, Savage Harvest, The Tailor of Panama.:D

I also like Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World TV series.....

Go on add away.......

"The Naked Prey" (1966) Cornel Wilde.

"The Last Hunt" (1956) Robert Taylor.

"Africa Speaks" (circa, 1930s) documentary.

"Ghost and the Darkness" (1996) Michael Douglas -- silly recounting of Patterson's hunt for two man eaters during building of railroad through Kenya.

One of my favorite movies might fit the bill:

The Man Who Would be King - Sean Connery and Michael Caine

'The life and death of Colonel Blimp', not an adventure movie strictly speaking, but it covers the titular hero's life and military career from the Boer war, through his middle age in the first world war up to his home guard service in 1943 and has a nice array of army uniforms, suits and ball gowns etc.

How about....

The Naked Jungle (1954) Starring Charlton Heston

Secret of the Incas
(1954) also starring Heston where his costume is almost an exact match for Indiana Jones'.

China (1943) Starring Alan Ladd (screened by Lucas and Spielberg before they made Raiders.)

Then of course there are the classic serials such as...

The Masked Marvel (1943)
Spy Smasher (1942)
G-men vs. the Black Dragon (1943)
Adventures of Smilin' Jack (1943)

Just a few to add to the list.

Zulu from 1964, Trader Horn from 1931 with Harry Carey and a very young Duncan Renaldo (aka the Cisco Kid) wearing the largest pith helmet in the world, and a pile of Clark Gable flicks, including Red Dust (with Jean Harlow, woohoo!), Test Pilot (with Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy), The Call of the Wild (with Loretta Young, and we all know what happened on THAT set), etc., etc.
Now that I look again, you're talking about all styles and fashions of the era, and not just adventure styles, right? If we go down that route we'll never come back. ;)

I just saw "Mountains of the Moon" (1990) for the first time. Patrick Bergin portrays Richard Burton and Iain Glen portrays John Speke in this gripping motion picture of the explorers' search for the source of the Nile, circa 1850s.

I agree with The man who would be king....what a classic...Connery and Caine were born for those roles...

Caine said it's the only thing he's done that will live on after he's dead

The drill scene with the tribesmen is pure gold...

Hatari, won't win any awards but it is fun and very much in the spirit.

I haven't heard of Mountains of the Moon. Sounds like I will have to find it.
