Yessss. Gary's family was originally from Kentucky, but settled in my parent's hometown of Ft. Pierce, FL when he was a youngster. That part of Florida has a long history of cattle, citrus and country living. Gary was a compatriot of Mel Tillis, another (recently deceased) Floridian. When I was younger working my way through college I worked for a local funeral home that held the funeral for Gary's sister who sadly had committed suicide. Unfortunately, Gary followed in her footsteps years later after the death ofhis wife from pneumonia. He has a high, lonesome voice and songs that fit the hard-living life he led. If you're in one of "those" moods, his songs and voice will break your heart.
Gary's photos frequently show him in fedoras.

I do recall his suicide.....what a sad day. When you hear his voice there is no mistaking it for anyone else. Thanks for the story Perry. It's always interesting to hear these stories.

Much tragedy in that family. I believe Gary's son had committed suicide as well.

Sad to hear. I didn't realize he was from Cairo GA where I attended high school. Seems he was born about 5 years before I graduated.

Yeah all the Big Super Star British Rockers that are deceased now except for Robert Plant and Eric Clapton pretty much . They came every year and made the pilgrimage from Jackson TN , Brownsville TN , Memphis , on down through the Delta to Cleveland MS . They visited the Old Blues Guys when they were alive , and their graves when they weren't . Its called the Blues Trail .

"Sunshine" Sonny Payne, host of the long-running King Biscuit Time radio show, has passed away. He was 92 years old. The program, which aired on KFFA 1360 AM in Helena-West Helena Arkansas, was the longest-running blues show in the country.

I've already posted pics of Billy Gibbons, but this time it's ZZ Top. One of my all time favorites. Photos during Rio Grande Mud tour and Fandango. While I was working at a western store in the 70s, a limousine pulled in. A heavy set gentleman, wearing nice western clothes came in. Said he was in town with a band that was performing. He bought some high end clothes and boots and said his crew would be back for some clothing. Later the limousine came back filled with long haired cowboys. They bought everything from boots to buck knives. One asked if I would match a scarf to a suit the singer wore. Of course I said yes, and he brought in the suit. I almost hit the floor when I saw that it was Nudie suit with the state of Texas on the back. They were the road crew for ZZ Top. Great guys, all of them. We shot the bull quite a while. Kiss was opening for them and they were not pleased. One said, that guy that pukes blood may get his ass kicked yet!
I saw them during their Tejas tour, a couple years later.
