Wow, what a crew!
A mean old Stone Age Bluegrass crew, indeed! Kenn Baker's fiddle always amazes me. Nobody else can play that kind of stuff with a left hand "axe-grip" like his :)

If you ever watch a video of Lonesome Moonlight Waltz, notice how he constantly switched between the old-timey axe-grip and a more classic grip, depending on the position on the neck. He could even slowly slide a double-chord from first position to far up the neck - switching grip along the way! That's impossible, but I guess nobody ever told him. He played like a dream ... a very sweat dream! :)

You must play some fiddle also!!

I've tried my best to copy his style on some of his songs, but still found myself having to just do my own thing on most parts.
A great master fiddle player!

I don't play much anymore. I might pull the Ol bow out this weekend. :)

I thank you for the confidence, but that would definitely be the overstatement of the month :)

I play 5-string banjo and guitar - old-time and bluegrass. I have "fiddled around" with a fiddle (and mandolin, uke, dulcimer, autoharp and dobro), but I'm not a fiddler. I played with a lot, and I was married to a violinist for 10 years, so I picked up a little fiddle-knowledge over time ;)

He is one of my favorites too. He had a wonderful old-timey sound ... "loyal to the mountain", so to say. Well, back to hats ... ;)

As some of you may know, my youngest daughter graduated this Summer. Shortly after we almost lost her older sister to a dreadful infection ... induced coma, respirator and all. Fortunately she survived and has completely recovered.

Anyway, it kept me a little distanced from the rest of the World, which probably is why I didn't hear, that Ralph Stanley lost his life to cancer June 25. this Summer. I found out yesterday, and I would like to post a vid with a proud hat wearer, that will be sorely missed. Only a still-photo - but I believe an appropriate song for the sad occasion:

I didn't get a chance to tell you, but great song and very appropriate. He'll be missed!!!

I listed to that song, and then another and on it went. I've listened to countless Stanley Bro. And Ralph's songs for the last couple of days.

Thank you for the push! :)

Is that Melissa Barnes and her Husband ? They have a place in Durango making Custom Hats , Saddles , and Leather Work , can't recall the name though . Yep , I just checked ... It's them ...

This is Melissa Barnes in action (Durango Custom Hats and Saddles) making a Hat .

Merle is missed Big Time ! Amazing that Johnny Cash inspired him to get into music professionally seeing him while a guest at Fulsome , or San Quentin I think that's what I heard , or read somewhere . I don't do Facebook or I'd look . Merle ... Performing at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards ...
