Early Paul Whiteman records are very evocative for the early twenties. If you want to get a little jazzier, look for the Benson Orchestra of Chicago directed by Don Bestor. These were hot pups as the Jazz Age was defining itself.

When I was a kid we had a bunch of Harry Lauder comic songs from the teens that I still find entertaining. "It's Nice To Get Up In The Morning, But It's Nicer To Lie In Bed," such things as that. "Hoot mon!"

Arthur Fields -- How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down On The Farm (1919)

Great!

Then there is Noble Sissle's version, accompanied by the 365th infantry "Hellfighters", the flip side of which is the equally interesting "On Patrol in No Man's Land".

I'm trying to educate myself about the music of the Teens and Twenties and I know there are people here with extensive knowledge and experience in that area, so I'm hoping for some good suggestions on what and who I should check out.

This is my favorite www.the1920snetwork.com I listen to it all the time they tell you the artist and sometimes the year its on 24/7 and its simply great.

Gertie Millar -- Moonstruck (1910)
featured in the musical Our Miss Gibbs

Moon, Moon, mischief-making Moon!
What are you doing there?
You seem like a fairy dream,
Up in the midnight air.
When I look at you I always know
You will shoot me with your silver bow.
Just as soon as the daylight's gone,
Well, it's then I feel a foolish sort of feeling coming on!

(Chorus)
I'm such a silly when the moon comes out;
I hardly seem to know what I'm about;
Skipping, hopping, never never stopping,
I can't keep still, although I try.
I'm all a-quiver when the moonbeams glance;
That is the moment when I long to dance.
I can never close a sleepy eye
When the moon comes creeping up the sky!

Moon, Moon, aggravating Moon!
Why do you tease me so?
I think you're inclined to wink;
That isn't right, you know.
Ev'ry day I'll be as good as gold;
Doing ev'rything that I am told.
But as soon as the sun's in bed,
Well, it's then I've such a flighty little, foolish little head!

(Chorus)

Consuelo Bello, aka "La Fornarina"
Consuelo Bello (1885-1915) was a Spanish cupletista (music hall artiste) who was popular in Europe during this period. Here's three of her recordings, recorded in Berlin in 1912.

1. Machicha
2. El Polichinella
3. Clavelitos
