This was one amazing group! :eusa_clap
The name was used by different bands, and was taken from the title of an extremely successful 1924 show co-written by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle. The earliest ensemble using it was directed by Don Redman, and recorded for OKeh in 1928 and 1929. Recordings that Redman supervised for McKinney's Cotton Pickers also were issued under that name. During the early '30s, several groups under Benny Carter's leadership were called Chocolate Dandies. Coleman Hawkins was featured in editions of the group in both the '30s and '40s; others who were featured in subsequent editions included Max Kaminsky, Floyd O'Brien, Buck Clayton, plus members of both Carter's and Fletcher Henderson's bands.

Enjoy!

Nice version Connery! :) Pity the song is ingrained in the psyque of humanity as being so 1940s... you know... the war years?
Nice version of Stardust all the same, thank you!

For some I am sure you are correct. I would like to add, "Stardust" is an American popular song composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics added in 1929 by Mitchell Parish. Originally titled "Star Dust", Carmichael first recorded the song at the Gennett Records studio in Richmond, Indiana. Carmichael's original 1927 recording of the song was one of 50 recordings chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry...

If I am not mistaken this is the version selected for the Library of Congress. Simply delightful!!!

The Luis Russell Orchestra started in Chicago and then moved to New York. They were one of the most innovative bands of their day, but never had the commercial success that they deserved. They are generally considered to be one of the first Swing bands. The band first backed up Louis Armstrong in 1929 on the record "Mahogany Hall Stomp". By 1935 Louis Armstrong had taken over the orchestra altogether, some say as a result of the depression, and for the next eight years they functioned solely as back-up band for Armstrong, with Luis Russell acting as the musical director.

Great thread, y'all! Don't forget that western swing took off on a different flavor of jazz and really could get it cookin' :D I'd have liked to have heard some of those guys play live.
