Mouton collar agony

Hi loungers. Predictably, it was pointless trying to give up my leather jacket habit. I'm back!

What I want now, for the encroaching colder weather, is a trim-fitting Vicenza leather Aero with a mouton collar. Mouton is in again (or soon will be)!

I've been tossing up all sorts of ideas:

M-422A
Sheene (yes, with a mouton)
Aero premier highwayman
Aero Original Hercules

Colour will almost certainly be dark seal Vicenza and gold mouton. With the M-422A I was even thinking of going with berry knits. My feeling with this model is one desperately wants to avoid the baggy 'dad' mall-jacket fit (even if one is a dad), plus all brown is a bit dull.

I guess, apart from the mouton, the main criterion is warmth: leather in itself isn't enough.

Personally I would go with a G-1 or M-422A with mouton collar and is amazing how much warmer a G-1 is than an A-2. But a Sheene with mouton collar ...

I really struggle with the idea of mutton on such narrow collars...
IMO a mutton collar looks far more in place on a perfecto style jacket, or at least something double breasted.

My girlfriend just got a ladies motorcycle jacket, Vincenza with a mutton collar, heavy strome lining and moleskin in the arms, she is loving it!

Very nice, jacket. I was turned on to the idea of mouton recently when visiting Real McCoy's in London and trying on their M-422A. I suddenly realised: mouton's warm, and it rocks!

Awesome jacket @Carlos840 ! I get a kick out of gf shopping. Seems the vintage stores have MUCH more going for women, and quite frankly, women can wear anything including men's clothes and look good. Next life.

I agree that a mouton collar works best on larger collars, though from what I've seen online the jacket doesn't need to be a cross zip style for it to look great. I've seen quite a few classically styled jackets with mouton collars that looked killer. I think Terry here has two?

That's a killer jacket she's got! My girlfriend is looking for a perfecto as well and has tasked me with it but I can't find anything that would fit her well. Well, anything that's not mall crap which have literally touched rock bottom in quality. Even the pricey ones. I've never seen a worse looking jackets than what's being sold at the brand stores this year...

Here's an alternative: Eastman Air Comfort.

Large Mouton collar: check.
Dark Seal brown horse hide: check (not Vincenza but the ELC HH is very nice nonetheless).
Warm: check (quilted body and sleeves!).
Plus moleskin lined handwarmer pockets!
Plus dark brown knits and a crimson quilted interior that contrasts nicely against the seal HH.

I'd go with the Original Herc, I think that could look quite special with the gold mouton collar.

I did have a Hercules (not the original) with a mouton collar and I can testify that it was a warm jacket. Russet steer hide with Russet collar, I only sold it as it was a slightly longer style and was a nuisance when I was driving as you turned inside the jacket rather than the jacket turning with you.

You're right. The Original Herc is pretty swish.

Have lately been thinking about a Premier Maxwell with mouton. God, and I thought my indecisiveness was in remission!

How will a mouton collar react to rain? I'm afraid it will be as wet as a sponge, though I never had any experience with mouton collars.

I just got mine this year so I'm going to put this jacket to the test. I'd imagine it depends on your personal preference and tolerance but I'd say this jacket is good up until the temp hits the upper 60's or so.

Ken at Aero has suggested a stripped down workman coat with mouton, instead of a Maxwell. Could be cool. Bit of a gangster look.

When you're talking about cold weather, how cold do you mean? I was considering a shearling-lined Highwayman for Winter (before Aero released the ThunderBay), but you may or may not find shearling lining an overkill. I'd lso think very carefully about which model you want if you're going for a warm, Winter jacket - anything too close fitting might be difficult to layer with, limiting its use in dead of Winter, then a warm lining might also limit its use in warmer times.

Hi Edward. London cold, primarily. So, not Arctic. But I find eg my Maxwell with mouton lining doesn't really keep you very warm; it's almost just like wearing a thick plaid shirt when you consider that the thin wool layer is all that's doing the insulation. I've found that I was just putting up with the cold until I put my lovely peacoat on and realised I could actually be warm.

I'd like something that by itself will be pretty warming with maybe just a thin jumper underneath. Accept I wouldn't be able to wear it in the height of summer.

You ideally want something that traps the air.

Anyone know what the descending order of Aero liner warmth is?

Aero would be better positioned to give you the skinny on that, but for my own opinion, the warmest will be the shearling lining, then the blanket, then alpaca, then the tartans, then the cotton, then anything satiny last. I have a LW B3 and an ELC Irvin that ared great in London Winters; also hoping eventually to buy a Thunder Bay and a heavy-lined Barnstormer from Aero. THe Barnstormer is especially attractive, being that it can be cut to cover a suit jacket...

Pretty tempted to go M-422A. Look at this gorgeous specimen I tried on today at Real McCoy's (actually an ANJ4 but they are very similar).
