I'm in the market for some winter boots. What kind of boots do you fellas wear in the snow? I'll be pairing the boots with slacks, wool pants, etc. I don't want any industrial, vortex, really chunky boots, but I need something that looks nice in winter weather. What would Bogie have worn?

You can get them new from www.aeroleatherclothing.com. They are reproductions of RAF 1936 pattern flying boots. Cowhide shell with sheepskin lining and a leather sole. Price is 190.00 GBP but they are really worth it, extremely comfortable and damn good looking as well.

What's closest today to the AAF rubber-bottomed flight boots, ie, Type A-6?

I see inexpensive pull-on or zip-on pac boots for sale, lacking the straps or shearling liner, but of roughly the same appearance including the extra-heavy rubber soles.

Stacy Adams Madison Boot

I found a pair of Stacy Adams Madison Boots at a local thrift store last week. $24.99 and in excellent cindition. Leather uppers, outsoles, and lining. Manmade insoles. The same boots sell at Zappos for $109.00.

I took them to a local shoe repair shop and they advised a good leather conditioner and polish. Otherwise, they are fine. A very comfortable lightweight dress boot at a good price.

I've had two pair of Stacy Adams Madisons, one pair of boots and one of oxfords.

Both were remarkably comfortable and light, whilst still giving good support.

The only thing that I absolutely hated was the leather they're made out of - kid skin. I don't know if I was abusing mine or something, but they wrinkle really badly and look as if they've been worn for scores of years without care.

I wouldn't pay over $90 for a pair, but they're definitely one of my favourites.

Shoe trees will definitely extend the life and appearance of these boots. I saw a pair of vintage trees for ankle boots somewhere on-line. I believe they were from the UK. They were one-piece incorporating the shoe body and the shaft. I've only seen them once.
You can use separate shapers to maintain the shaft on taller boots. I don't know what you use for the shorter shaft on an ankle boot. Someone on the Lounge probably does.
