Hi Y'all,

I am in the market for a melton wool coat and was curious if melton coat owners can shed some light on if it's warm enough with just a t-shirt in temperatures around 5-10 celsius and if it can repel water from light rain showers.
I'm currently looking at https://therealmccoys.com/products/field-sports-jacket and https://shangrilaheritage.it/product/varenne-forest-green-wool-jacket/ . If any current owners of these two jackets can shed some light on the question it would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Tim

I very briefly owned an RMC crosszip made from the same wool as the sports jacket in your link. I immediately returned it. It was entirely too flimsy. I also owned a Joe MCCoy railcoat and that wool was amazing. It was not melton. It was a boiled and hardened wool.

In my opinion melton wool tends to be flimsy and fuzzy, which are two characteristics I wish to avoid.

Thanks for the reply. Have you experienced it in wet weather? I don’t mind the fuzziness but I do care if it’s more water resistant.

In my experience melton wool has the tends to absorb, much more than the tight woven wool of my Aero or the smooth Kersey wool of my Navy peacoats. I do love the look of that RMC. I wish they had used the same wool they used on the railcoat.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t think I’ll get the real McCoy one then . Cheers.

I have this coat and it's awesome. I always get compliments when I wear it. The wool is beastly.
It is! I remember mine stood up like a CXL jacket, all on its own.
Unfortunately they only went up to a 42” and it was just too small.
