matching a hat

Hello everyone! Well, I have signed up for this forum because, on a whim, I came across Classic Style Magazine...wow! What a great publication! JUST what I have been searching for! This is almost my exact taste in clothing, movies, etc. Anyway, onto my question...I would definitely like to incorporate hats into my wardrobe. I have a substantial amount of dress clothes that has a classic look or feel to it (i.e. pinstripes, even a three piece). It is not full on vintage (although that's what I'd like, it's hard to find!!) I would like to wear a hat along with my suits. How do I buy a hat that matches these suits? I have a navy blue w/pinstripe suit, and a dark olive w/ black herringbone suit (for starters...I have a few others as well, but these are my favs.) For instance, do I have to match colors exactly? I've noticed that in movies set in a time where men commonly wore hats with their suits (like Chinatown) the hats usually never match the suits exactly. Is this shoddy costume work, or is this what generally happens? I defintely agree with what is stated in the magazine..."A man needs a hat"!!!!

Thank you all very much for your help! John in Covina, those articles were especially helpful! On this one

, the only thing i'm having trouble with is figuring out whether I am a short full face or a square face. I am not sure which one I am leaning toward. It seems like I am right smack in the middle! What do you all think? Here's a pic of me...

At any rate, do you folks have any other ideas about which hats would look good on me? Thanks so much!

I think you have a square type face, square jaw, etc. My advice on matching hats is not to try. Obviously, certain combinations just look bad, but, in general, it's hard to go wrong with certain colors. As mentioned, BROWN in different shades goes with just about anything. I'm a big fan of brown hats.

Best thing to do is find a place and try on a bunch of hats in the end. Then you'll get a better idea of how something goes with your face / head, plus your style of dress, color coordination and help you put together your personal fashion style.

Go and have some fun at the nearest Hat Shop ASAP!

How do I go about finding those? It seems that all that google turns up are baseball cap type places with one or two generc fedoras. Is there a website or zip code locator of some sort?

Just maybe they'll have some fedoras

Otherwise, try Thrift stores and second hand shops as well as antique stores to find a preowned needs a little cleaning hat.

Or save and travel to "the Big City" like NY etc where they have more hat shops around.
