Those 50,000 people all had families too, so speeding is still no big deal?

"The Road and Traffic Authority (RTA) state that the inappropriate use of speed (which is known there as "speeding") is a factor in about 40 per cent of road deaths."

To put that into perspective, according to the World Almanacs, Life Insurance Actuarial (death) Rates, and the U.S. Surgeon Generals' reports for the last 20 years, tobacco kills between 340,000 to 450,000 people per year. Alcohol, not including the 50 percent of all automobile deaths, kills over 150,000 people per year. Caffeine, such as can be found in coffee, triggers 1,000 to 10,000 deaths per year from stress, ulcers, and triggering irregular heartbeats. Legal drug overdoses weigh in with 14,000 to 27,000 deaths per year.

Marijauna, according to these sources, kills zero. However, for some unexplainable reason, it is still illegal and still highly overpenalized. In 2004, there were more pot related arrests than all other arrests combined. For a nation with a problem of prison overcrowding and underfunding, continuing the criminalization of marijauna seems rather illogical.

I don't smoke pot, but it being illegal just doesn't make sense to me. As for it being a gateway drug, alcohol comes in way before pot.

I completely agree that the criminilization is pointless and the history of pot criminilization has more to do with politics than it had to do with a problem to society. Hearst was part of it, anti immigrant hysteria was also part of it.

But i do think it is likely that a few people die from driving under the influence of pot. And if Maryanne was swerving and driving badly, that might be a reason to prosecute.

On the other hand, I tend to think most pot smokers are safer than drunk drivers, but I woud just as soon, my pilot, my bus driver, my truck driver, and fellow drivers not be under the influence of anything.

Wow - what a great story and life changing event! I can't imagine how a person would freak out with such a close scrape.

Let me say also that I agree 100% foofoogal. It's kind of a slap when those we thought were innocent turn out to be... not so much.

This guy will always be a hero of mine. A friend was on a plane with Fred Rogers, and saw that he actually took the flight time to help look after children on board.

rogers_zoom.jpg

Hopefully, some of my childhood heroes will stay untarnished! What ever happened to Elly Ma Clampett, by the way?

Edit: She stayed away from trouble. Gospel singer even!

Funny, I grew up watching Giligans Island on rerun, but I guess I came up at a less innocent or more cynical time. We liked the show, but had no real connection to the ideas of innocence versus ginger's sensuality etc. So I guess the idea of Marry Anne beign an icon of innocence is meaningless to me. It can almost be seen as a metaphor for the changes of the late sixties. To have grown up in the early ssixties watching the show was very different, perhaps, than watching it when I did.

Although, I must say, the idea of a loss of the impression of innocence is only connected to a random law and societal idea.

Now, if you ahd found out Mary Anne had an affair with Giligan and the Professor at hte same time durrinng the filming, or learning about Bob Crane and his sexcapades, or hearing about Danny Bonaduce's major drug addctions, or the romantic liasons that went on on the Brady Bunch set, then I can understand.

But to a person of my generation and liberal mindset, finding out mary Anne possesed pot means no more than finding out she had a bottle of wine in her trunk. I just don't see it as a big deal or sinister.

But taht is all perspective.

I am bemused though.
I also am very bemused by this whole thread. I thought I would make a quick comment about a story of the day. Small talk really.
Instead I took a mental roller coaster ride back to my childhood, teenage years and a still painful recent memory.

I promise you I know a few hippies still hanging on. I come from a huge family like I have stated a hundred times.
Do I stay awake nights worrying about old hippies wasting their money on pot. No.

How do I know that is not being said just to fortify their argument?
This is a major compliment to me personally. I do hope there is not a shred of the person I was at one time.

I try to be a solid role model for my over 50 nieces and nephews. Some don't like me and some do but I promise you they know where I stand on everything. Pretty funny as the years go by though that they will come back to ask my advice after other people who could give a flying flip about them have steered them wrong.
Do I want them to drink, smoke, break the law, have as the latest stat 1 in 4 VD as young people. NO.
Surely, as long as you don't hurt one person in your endeavor. Far Out Man and Peace.

Perfectomundo, and peace to you too.

"Plus it's so great about everyone being so open about breaking the law. I'm not sure you realize exactly what and where you are saying this? (you may want to read up on the 5th)" Sarah Smith

Wow, I think you hit on a new law: TWT, typing while toking..or TOI, toking on the internet.:D

But there is a more ominous side to what you said. It's true that many, many people world wide partake, have good jobs, keep a low profile because they know law enforcement is everywhere, even here at the lounge. See those three guys in the corner, they're narcs so be cool..;)

bye now

People are human and make mistakes. You have to decide to forgive or move on. Or just have a good laugh. Life is a tragedy to those who feel and a comedy to those who think.

This is true.

I've been reading a lot of stuff by Bo Lozoff. He heads a program that works with incarcerated criminals. It's weird to read about compassion for murderers, rapists and so forth, but the stories of people turning their lives around can be pretty powerful.

Was that mispelled name intentional?

Done. Danny Bondadouche has probably done all that and more.

Il Bon-a-duce:rolleyes:
He was the first guy I thought of, reading about bong hits with Maryann and Gilligan.

I just found some old Partridge Family albums my sister had back in the day. Lousy songs and those horn and backing vocal arrangements had to go, but the wrecking crew session musicians actually made some of those songs sound pretty good.

Really, none of this celeb gone bad stuff is new. I also watched Echo Park the other day. This was Susan Dey's big chance to distance herself (onscreen) from Laurie Partridge. In addition to becoming a stripper, she certainly squeezed the F word into an admirable percentage of her lines. Lousy movie, btw.

Ha, I didn't think anybody would spot that spelling 'error.' Good eye!
Nothing is as sad, in my mind, as the chick from Family Matters (Jaimee Foxworth) doing porn. She was also on Celebrity Rehab, go figure.

That is sad. didn't all the kids from Different Strokes go wrong as well? Does that make Conrad Bain the TV world's worst father?

sorry - just checked IMDB - the TV show was called "Diff'rent Strokes"

Different Strokes, apparently was however, the name of a sleaze flick starring the ill-fated Dana Plato. Now THAT's sad - on so many levels....

What was Mary Ann thinking?
Though Spitzer rode roughshod over most of the week's news, a few other stories still managed to slip to the top of Buzz. One of them was a Yahoo! News article on Dawn Wells, the actress best known for her portrayal of Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island." The aging star was caught in a pot bust, fined several hundred dollars, and slapped with six months of "unsupervised probation." But the indignity didn't stop there.

The story stirred a tremendous amount of interest in Search—but not about Dawn Wells. Instead, lookups skyrocketed for Tina Louise, the va-va-voom redhead who played Ginger on the show. We registered an astonishing 13,076% rise in demand for her name (compare that to Wells' 5,860%). Just the thought of Mary Ann triggered all these luscious old memories of Ginger, Ginger's photos, and Ginger's legs. Searchers also boosted "tina louise news" and "tina louise now." What would the Professor say?
From the Yahoo Buzz.

See, it wasn't just me and it is still about Ginger. Poor Mary Ann. lol

Well, who isn't an aging star? Even Natalie Portman is aging, as far as I know.

PS It's still Mary Ann over Ginger any day of the week.
