Maple And Vine

There's an off-Broadway that ran this winter in New York called "Maple and Vine," written by one Jordan Harrison -- a play with a premise very much of interest to many Loungers. In the story, a modern 21st century couple becomes disillusioned and disenchanted with the 21st Century way of life and joins a community of "1950's reenactors" who have actually taken over a town and rebuilt it along '50s lines, a premise not unlike the well known "Our Own Vintage Town" thread here at the Lounge.

The play sounds as though the "'50s" depicted by the reenactors in the show are actually the 50s as a modern twentysomething Mad Men fan might imagine them to be, with both the positives and the negatives highly exaggerated -- but the mere fact that such a play has been written suggests that there's more people out there fed up with modern culture and looking for an escape than we realize.

A discussion of the play and an interview with Mr. Harrison can be read here and a review of the production is here. And Mr. Harrison, if you're here and have been using us for research, please reveal yourself.

Did any of our New York contingent happen to see this show?
