Just FYI, but don't expect to see much golden era "Gangland" if you visit Chicago. I was there last summer and it turns out Mayor Daley Sr. thought the gangster legacy was bad for tourism and had most remnants destroyed. So there is no SMC Cartage company (site of the St. Vals massacre) no Dion O'Banion's flower shop, etc. to be seen! All gone, sadly!

Too many modern day gangsters slaughtering each other these days!

If I'm right, Chicago is the only city in the world with a river that flows backwards...

The flow of the river was reversed (for sanitary purposes) in what was one of the great engineering marvels of the world.

You're right that "Old Man" Daley didn't particularly care for the gangster era but he didn't have them razed; he simply didn't protect them from developers. Just as he didn't protect scores of other important buildings designed by the likes of Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and other prominent architects from the Chicago School. But then, NYC did the same......
