Ahh ..the tragedy ..another story of a psyche taken to the brink by the neverending tick of the auction clock..

I would advise taking control of your destiny and saving your pennies for a custom job or at least a high quality vendor model.......

You've said yourself the vintage thing doesn't hold a high appeal so why chase the dragon that will only turn it's barbed tail upon you....?

Well, before Dinerman bid on it, the hat was listed at 8 bucks with only 1 bid. I'm willing to pay a nominal fee, you know? If the hat doesn't work, I'll just reauction it. As for the other two Stetsons I listed -- like I said, there are so few vintage hats in my size that come up that I'm compelled to try to win them, just to see if they'd work on me.

I do purchase new -- I have three Akubras (Federation, Traveller, Casual) and I'll have a Sydney soon as well. Custom is far beyond what I'm willing to pay at this stage in the game, but I do admire the work I see.

I won that- sorry for outbidding you, but a friend of my dad's (this guy doesn't doesn't know anything about vintage hats, other than he wants one to replace a worn out newer stetson) who is a 7-3/4 told me to get a hat for him.

By the way, to be completely honest, I wish I could be angry about this, but there's really nothing I can be angry about. eBay is a fair marketplace and if I really wanted it, I would've bid more -- I just wish, for once, I could get myself a vintage hat in my size (the Knox I actually won doesn't count because it smells and it's a 7 5/8 Long Oval which they never mentioned, so I have to work on it a bit).

I'm lamenting here, obviously. It's salt in the wound to know this hat is going to somebody who doesn't know "anything about vintage hats." Oh well. Maybe this hat will kindle an interest in the new owner.

My quest continues.

No, honestly, I understand -- I don't mean to make you feel like there's any reason to defend yourself because you did nothing wrong whatsoever. You won an auction fairly. But, you know, there's the part of me that wants to put thumbtacks on your chair, too, you know? It's a natural thing, at least for me. I don't like losing. I also don't like pastels. Or shoelaces, on any of my shoes. Or progressive rock.

Nah- I think it was a 7, but still, with the price most strats fetch, I was shocked.

Smaller hats tend to go cheap, by comparison to the larger sizes. I didn't bid on it because I contain myself to hats I can wear. I have yet to bid on a hat below 7 1/8 or larger than a 7 3/8.

Just another of the wrinkles of ficklebay. Every time you think you've got the who/what/where down, something comes along to throw asunder everything you knew..

I can think of a few "regular" bidders that were either at the head or in bed during that auction...

shoelaces?

I don't like spending my time tying and untying my shoes. It feels like I'm wasting time. It may be my subconscious mind's homage to Albert Einstein, who (I read) calculated the time it took in an average man's lifespan to put his socks on and off and decided it wasn't worth it to wear them any longer. Which I think is totally weird because socks are comfortable and practical.

yeah- somehow having the work junk in my ebay name didn't seem like the best idea.

:fedora: The key to Ebay is patience. I have consistantly seen items- not only hats- get bid up to ridiculous heights- more that their worth- to find an identical item the next week which no one bids on and it goes for opening bid.

It seems to run in streaks. Most of the hats I've found were NEVER WORN and the most I've paid for beaver felt name brand ones is $20. They're out there again and again and you can find what you want if you watch and wait.

A good example for me is a "necker knob" for my vintage Packard. I saw vintage ones go up to $50! I watched and found the one I wanted a few weeks later for $16. Same for hats. Same for everything. Don't get jammed up in the frenzy of the moment thinking you have to settle for less or pay way more.:fedora:

I purchased a Ping golf bag from a pro shop here in town for $165.00 a few days later I saw the same bag (used) go on ebay for $275 plus shipping. Frenzy always drives the price over its value. Vintage hats are gaining in popularity and the newbies are fueling the price increases among other agitators. Wisdom and patience will overcome naivety and aggression every time.
