Here is my new Gannon. Sahara Winchester beaver, copper coloured ribbon. I asked for his 'vintage' finish and I am most pleased with the result. It has the hand of my vintage Borsalinos, The bash is just hand placed, no steam, pops out easily so I can rebash it each time I put it on. I think Michael is The Man these days in terms of the quality of his hats.

Beautiful, Robert. Gannon has the benefit of several years of non-stop hat making. His hats have certainly gotten better over time.

I think the huge addition to his skill set is being able to offer different "feels" to his felts. Some buyers like the soft vintage feel while others prefer a harder set to the bash. Michael offers both. I am super pleased with this hat but not sure how I will order my next one as I like both types. Choice is a great thing.

Gorgeous hat in your pics. Your description of the felt has me feeling the need to get back in que for a hat. The sahara hued felt is dynamite.

Yours is a hat that I have in long term memory. It pops to mind when I read sahara beaver felt. Gorgeous hat.

I hesitated on ordering the Sahara as all I had ever seen is the little felt swatch from Art. But it was one of the colours I did not have. I love it. Not too light in colour, a perfect shoulder season hat. I liked it so much I commissioned my tailor to make me a shirt/jacket to match the ribbon (the jacket in the picture). Michael's 'vintage' feel really is something special.

A quick question about the Vintage Finish - Would that vintage finish on a western hat still allow shaping a brim or would it be to soft to hold a roll?
Thanks.

I have a few Gannon westerns where the crown is thin, dense, and moldable like a vintage hat, but the brims are more substantial; just like I asked for. If your concern is that the vintage-like felt won’t hold a larger curl it’s still a bit of an unknown, but vintage homburgs hold curls as do vintage westerns so I think Gannon’s will work too.

Gannon used to just have one curling shackle and it was a small radius that just gave the last 1/8 inch (or so) a bit of a curve. Gannon now has a much larger radius shackle for homburg style curled edges. I’ve yet to see a Gannon with this new curled brim, but I have placed an order for one with an early autumn delivery date.

I think if you talked to Michael about what you wanted to achieve he would be able to tell you what is possible. But I certainly agree with Brent that there is no reason Michael can't pounce the crown thinly and leave the brim with more substance.

My dress weight's brim still has substance and while the curl is not radical it holds it shape well. It still has substance....the best of both worlds....brim & crown.

I received some pictures from Michael. I chose the tone on tone Camel ribbon. I liked the Kangaroo color, but I wanted to keep the Open Road inspiration. I went with Michael’s suggestion on the sweat and liner. He said he liked the antique sweatband with a brown liner on Camel; so that’s what I am going with.

I received an email from Michael stating that my hat is complete. He enclosed a picture of the finished product. The picture depicts exactly what I had in mind for this commission. The color, style, and crease represent an excellent example of what I expected in a Gannon inspired Open Road. Now the excitement intensifies as I anticipate the arrival of my hat.

My Gannon inspired Open Road arrived today. I am over the moon! The Camel beaver felt is such a wonderful color. To my eye, it’s a warm tan with an aged yellow hue. The picture Michael sent captures the color better than the felt swatch sample I received.

The felt is dense and the weight is light. The hand and pouncing are superb. The ribbon, sweatband, and binding stitching are completed with an artisans touch.
I changed directions for this hat after I was in Michael’s que. I have always liked the look of the Open Road, but I originally was leaning towards a traditional fedora. The 2 3/4” brim of the Open Road didn’t appeal to me. Then I read about the "LBJ" which was based on the 3X Wide Country with 2-1/4" bound edge brim. The LBJ brim dimensions also didn’t appeal to me; so I chose to go with a 2 1/2” bound brim. 5 1/2” open crown with a soft cattle man crease at 4 1/2”. Keeping with my OR/LBJ theme, I had my full name embossed on the sweat like the LBJ; minus the "Made Expressly For President Lyndon B. Johnson".

Could anything make my custom Gannon inspired Open Road more enjoyable? In my opinion, no. The price was even less expensive with shipping than the mass production hat which inspired my custom Gannon. I couldn’t ask for a better experience.

Smashing Gannon, Steven! It’s classically styled and yet it’s custom to your preferences. Congrats to you and to Michael!
