It took too long for me to get off my dime and get into Mike Gannon's queue. Today I ordered a Navy Blue dress hat. Looking for a 5 3/4 crown, 2 5/8 brim with hopefully a shark's gill bow treatment. At present, I'm thinking a full on dress hat to go with blue suits. I might lean toward a contrasting light grey ribbon. I want to see what a true blue ribbon will look like though. The black cherry is off the table for a while, the felts are basically black right now. I'll wait til Winchester reissues a true "red" cherry felt. No "Rodolfo" for my first Gannon.

Great choice, Red. I love my dark navy Disney lid. I love the bow treatment Michael does for Rodolfo, but I also love the twisted knot Michael does, paired with the frayed back edges of the bow, as seen in Fruno/Jim's dark moss Gannon. Michael's execution of the bow is absolutely expert in my estimation.

You'll love it! I always wanted a "Black" black cherry, too.....

Fresh and warm out of the oven, my new Gannon is ready.

Silverbelly with a 2" Navy Blue ribbon and matching 5/8" Navy Blue brim binding.

Red, +1 to blue hats! The specs sound like it will be a sweet hat. I am curious to see the blue with a lighter gray ribbon. Matching binding edge? Flatter brim or trad snap or a trad fedora snap (ala vtg. Stetson Whippet inspired)?

I waited much to long before getting a blue hat. After seeing David showcase his and post a few pics of his hat wearing I was sold.

I am shocked how easy the blue hat wears.

As seen many times on this thread, my hats often have contrasting ribbons. I am a fan of them when done tastefully. Michael has done my hats tastefully. I chose the charcoal color on the navy so that it would coordinate with my frequent attire.

Blue- ahhhhh....

Red, excellent choice. I cannot wait to see your hat. New hat day coming!!

I think this beaut is pretty close to what I'm looking for. I'm afraid a light grey ribbon will take away from the formal look. This combo is just right.

I'm officially in the queue. Mike Gannon says we are looking at 5 weeks. A lot quicker than I first expected. Eric, you have swayed me on a ribbon color. Maybe just a hair wider for a more formal look. A knot with a light grey/red feature is another thought.
Mike works quick and efficient
looking forward to seeing the creation

Elves - no comment. Like Anthony my answer may elicit responses about my false beliefs or my temporary delusionary state.

Why be a Gannon Hat Co. client? For me it is easy. Check the pics and descriptions below.

Michael is the man! After several conversations with Michael, seeking advise on this thread and time spent working at home on my silver mist hat I shipped it back to the creator. Michael has worked on the hat and made it a champion in my eyes.

Original version below:

I really like the silver mist felt color. The felt is truly thin and malleable. That is both the excellent and the challenging characteristics of this color felt. The version above had gorgeous ribbon work and a big crown. For the life of me, I struggled with the crown height and working the felt into a crease. Lots of steam and working. Re-steam and re-work. You get the idea. When worked it always turned out like a top hat with a ribbon. Just a big tube with a dent on the top. The result of the struggle was that this silver mist hat rarely got out of it's hat box.

The newer version is presented below:

Discussions about the hat firmed up the decision to reduce the crown height and change the ribbon (more proportionate to the reduced crown height IMO). The hard work for Michael began with the arrival of the hat. Working so as not to have the sweat seams or previous crown marks show prominently lots of effort was expended. The result is pictured below.

i-BKtVdWF-M.jpg

In order to make the crown adjustments the brim wwas reduced an 1/8th" from it's orginal 2.5". In my world a wind cord is needed. The winds off the lake and thru the wooded lands have me using the cords during the week.

As to ribbon, I requested the charcoal ribbon I have used on a couple other hats. I chose that ribbon to be proportionate for the brim and crown size and it was a ribbon I knew. Very conservative choice, but I have not had a custom hat re-worked before and felt like I should be reserved.

Yes the same liner and leather sweat was used. Excellent use of quality, excellent materials. Keep the earth green!

I have not asked yet, but presume that copious amounts of hot steam were used to create a crease. To the purists I know that having Michael Gannon creating a crease may be sacrosanct, but I desired the expert assistance. I was unable to work the felt of the originals hat - I needed his assistance. I did not speak of any specifics and really enjoy the results.

The silver mist hat is now truly a grand hat! Check it out!

Thanks Michael Gannon for the efforts. I am proud to be a continued client of Gannon Hat Co.

Enjoying my hat, Eric -

Thank you for this post Eric. I agree about the ribbon width, I think this is where I will go with the Navy. That charcoal looks so great with the light silvermist. Your Gannon parade has been influential in my first order with Mike. I have high expectations based on your hat as well as the rest of the stellar examples on this thread. And yes, I have read and re-read all 100+ pages of this journey.

Thanks for the compliment and thumbs up. The heavy lifting is all Michael's. my experience is that subsequent hats from Gannon Hat Co have been of higher craftsmanship. The above is an example of his effort and integrity in working a clients hat. He had my respect. Red, I am confident that you will enjoy your Gannon Hat Co product.

Best this Saturday, Eric

Very nice, Eric. Heck, I liked the original, too.

I just wish I could get him to tackle a sharksgill. :(

Thanks.

Sharksgill-I would place an order for a couple hats if he announced this ribbon option. Perhaps we can pitch in for Michael's tuition to full ribbon school. You in? My checkbook is ready? (I date myself by using the checkbook reference. Last time I wrote a check was a long while ago.).

Sharksgill is of my fav ribbon treatment. So cool in eye appeal.

Ready to walk the walk. Eric
