Lucky Strikes

Unfortunately, the 7-11 and petrol stations right out front of the dorm don't carry Luckies, but a cafe less than a half mile up the street carries 'em. By far the best cigarettes I've ever had, even than these ones a friend of mine down the hall hand-rolls. I'm amazed they aren't carried in the convenience shop, like the dozens of Marlboros and Camels stacked up back there, which I think are practically flavourless in comparison.

We used to get small packs of nonfiltered Lucky Strikes, Camels, Pall Malls, Chesterfields and other lesser known brands in our field rations before the Army went PC. They were a bit stale, but better than the alternative.

I'm smoking them as I type....actually, just came back in to the office from smoking one. Definitely the best cigarette on the US market.

Haven't had a cigarette in 22yrs, but usually smoked Luckies or Camels, both unfiltered. I also remember the little 4 packs in C-rations. Never liked Pall Malls or menthols, but Chesterfields were OK. We also got free full packs of smokes in the field in Vietnam, along with soap, writing paper, and candy. When I was discharged, in 1969, a carton of Camels was $1.30 at the PX.

Currently, I'm paying $7.72 per pack. In contrast, Marlboro here are around $5 per pack

In Germany, you can get reds, silver (used to be called "lights"), hard and soft packs, with no filter, with no additives (in a brown [a.k.a. more "natural" pack, either hard or soft, blue or red label), ... The coolest ones were the anniversary ones a few years back: green "vintage" soft pack, with a removable filter (you could either smoke them with the filter or break it off along a perforated line).

It's funny to hear that they are so scarce in the States these days since a lot of Germans would associate Lucky Strike with a ("vintage") American image (which partially maybe has to do with GIs handing out cigarettes during the early post-WWII years). The marketing is also quite "aggressive," or widespread.

While I loathe smoking for killing my father, and would never, ever advocate its use, I am incredibly surprised they haven't capitalized on the Mad Men connection. I'd be all over the place with "Don Draper's Cigarette" ads, or at least ones that would make you think that.

never got hooked on cigarettes, but my first pack ever was unfiltered Camels in a soft pack and then a soft pack of unfiltered Luckies a while after that. They were $5 even when i bought them in 2006-2007 in California. Luckies were by far the best.

Every so often I grab a pack of Luckies, and whenever I see someone about to pull out a smoke at a party I offer them a Lucky Strike instead. Heck, half the reason I buy 'em is to give them away to people and promote the brand. I've made many people's nights when that soft pack comes out - jaws drop to the floor as though the people are amazed I've got them.

Luckies used to have a distinctive toasted flavor when manufactured by the American Tobacco Co.
Now that R.J. Reynolds has taken over, I think they taste less toasty and a lot more like Camels.

Or maybe it's just me, and my taste may have changed as I get older!

I can taste the difference between Camels and Luckys, but I'm not sure if its changed any. The difference between a Lucky and a Marlboro/Insert-any-premium-brand-here is huge though. Marlboro leaves a chemical aftertaste, which has got to be worse than the tobacco alone. Luckys don't have that foul aftertaste. When I used to smoke reds, I didn't notice the aftertaste.....but I sure do now. Cant ever switch back.

But my next goal is to lose the smoking for good. Just have 15lb more to go on my diet, then I'll be at my target weight. Can't do everything at once, lol

JPS.......that takes me back. Lucky's here are still filterless and only come in the red/white packs. I recall that in England the only choice was filtered

Brown and Williams tobacco sold the right of lucky strike unfiltered to RJ renolds (camel.) filters are no longer made here in the state But there are a few companies making them abroad. Switzerland, Ukraine, Taiwan and China make them. Ukrainian ones are pretty rough. the Swiss ones are by far the best they are made by Davidoff so they are top shelf, a little different but pretty close to the original. i would not recommend the Chinese ones. Lucky strikes made in taiwan are ok, but are closer more marlboros. when they folded it was the demise of an American icon. Mom, white picket fence, apple pie and lucky strikes.

Another reason for change in taste (besides company buy out, which may not have meant even a slight change in production) would be when all cigarettes had to go "fire safe" some years ago. I noticed a dramatic change in flavor of almost all cigarettes and spent some time shuffling brands. I would suggest searching online for cigarettes, there you can find non-fire safe luckys.

On a related note I would highly highly recomend galouises and merci's (formerly called gitanes). Both french cigarettes, the unfiltered versions are far and away my favourite non-filtered smokes.

I haven't smoked since the 70's but I always bought Lucky Strikes and Camels when I did. I didn't actually like smoking but I liked the routine of tapping and lighting a traditional cigarette. In those days, smoking wasn't nearly the pariah it's become.

I also like Nate Sherman's but mostly for the kitsch of them.

Luckies taste the same after the FSC - and no Luckies pack since FSC has carried the mark on the pack. I've given up smoking as of 2 weeks now though. I miss a good smoke, lol

I smoked Camels unfiltered for over fifty years. Luckys and Chesterfield made me cough. I could handle Pall Mall or Old Gold. If I could not get Camels I would try to find Phillip Morris. On occasion I would get a pack of Picayunes but they were hard to find. I can also remember Home Run cigarettes when I was a young boy. I loved tobacco, but have not smoked in three years. Miss it.
