Folks Ive been scouring the forums and shops for a soft felt fedora in mid grey, slate perhaps. I think I'm searching for the right thing; soft felt would be the thinner, smoother, not quite so furry type of felt? Anyway, any ideas what sort to go for?

Define low cost

Most decent fur felts in $100 range will have a nice smooth finish. My best luck has been with millerhats.com, whose name label hats are Biltmores. Check out the Manhattan. It's light weight and any other of their hats with the same finish should be equal to it. The Baldwin is also a very nice hat, but a little thicker felt. They also have a huge collection of Indy's, some of which are available in different colors and brim sizes. Just don't go for any Indy's that say they are "Licensed".
