Not really mine, but a wonderful Chesapeake Bay Retriever of one of the neighbors down at my Sisters Lake House in East TX. I’m down there a lot right now working on some stuff for them and He’s took a liking to me. Always there to ‘help’ me with outside projects. My kind of dog.....

Beautiful dog! Makes me think of the rare (& expensive) & controversial Silver Labrador Retriever.

Wow, it sure does ! It could be one, but I doubt it out in the Country running around......
When my dog Cochise died at almost 15 yrs of age, it took me 2 yrs before I would even consider another dog. He broke my heart. When I finally started to consider another dog I thought about finding a breeder for a silver Lab: after 2 red leopard Catahoulas I couldn't bear the thought of another breaking my heart. But over time in doing my research for a breeder I came back around to wanting another Catahoula. At first I thought I would get a blue leopard this time but I finally picked a pairing that would produce a red leopard to my liking & put a deposit down for 3rd pick of the liter.

Ahh, Cochise - great name ! After Little Joe's Beautiful Paint ?
I Love Catahoulas, my neighbor has one that the grand kids love playing with when they're over. Great Dogs !

I know what you mean about losing them. We've only had 3 dogs in our 37 years of marriage, living between 14 - 16 years, and each one was very tough to lose. Our first was a Samoyed that was our first child, before we had kids, and he was just wonderful when the kids came along. He did obedience shows and we had a sled team that we did charity events for. Pulled Santa's sleigh every year for some children's charities. Great dog.

Then we had Dakota, a Husky who continued the tradition....

Then came Duke, a rescued Lab/German Shepherd Mix.....

When Duke died at 15 years old about 5 years ago, it was the hardest on me since he was the last and we were empty nesters. He was my big helper, always in the middle of every project I was working on, doing yard work with me and always there. The house felt very empty when he was gone. We decided to wait a while before getting another dog so it would be easier traveling and such, but then we adopted the badass neighborhood cat who spent her first 2 years living outside hunting birds and squirrels......

I've never been a Cat Person, but she is just awesome. She thinks she's a dog. Always in the middle of my projects and helping me with yard work just like Duke used to, and being my drinking buddy. My Wife swears that she's Duke Reincarnated..... LOL

Now she's retired from hunting and living the easy life:

Since you posted that about the Silver Labs, I was doing a little research. Beautiful Dogs ! I was showing the Wife last night, and we may put that on the top of the list when we're ready for another dog closer to retirement. We were already leaning towards a Retriever, and I don't care if some breeders or the AKC doesn't recognize the breed. We won't be showing or breeding anyway. They don't appear to be quite as rare anymore and are available.

Thanks for posting that.

Beautiful dogs you have had.

When I was a kid we had two American Paints, one named Cochise & the other named Chiricahua Jack. My grandpa had a big speckled Appaloosa named Traveller after General Lee's favorite horse. That Appy was like riding in a Cadillac! I've now used all 3 names again.

I didn't care about AKC recognizing silver labs or not. Just eight yrs ago there was such a small breeding population of silvers that there was some problems with hip displasia & eye Kerititis (or whatever it is) showing up in them. Taking that chance scared me off a bit. If you decide to get one that is definitely something I would research & talk to any breeder about.

Very cool, gotta love the Paints and Appaloosas.

You’re right about those health problems in the early years of breeding because of the inbreeding due to the small gene pool. According to everything I’m reading now those are pretty much gone with the increased gene pool. Still a good idea to do some research on the specific breeder you chose though. I’ve always loved that color on Weimaraners, but not that crazy about the temperament.

It might be different now but AKC didn't recognize white labs either, claiming they were just yellow labs without pigment.

Not a fan of the Weimaraner either.

Great looking dogs Joe. Wonderful of you to take them in and give them a good home.
Thanks Tim. They came to us at a perfect time. We had not to long before lost my Dalmatian Sunshine who was by my side for most of her 13-14 years..... when they came walking up out of the fog while my wife was FaceTime with her mother. Skinny and starving.. and winter coming soon. The little black one Roxie was really days from death. They were still there when we arrived to visit a week later. We couldn’t leave with out them. There was actually a third... but he was determined to remain feral. They were definitely a blessing in our home at the right time.

My father in law tried for weeks with the third one... but he was very determined to not be domesticated and live his own way. These pics show perfectly the difference with these two. They were scared... but wanted to interact with people.. and had great personalities... especially Mugsy. The third was just too terrified to get with in an arms reach.

Great story Joe and some cool pics. It is always special when the pets choose you instead of you choosing them. That’s the same with my Cat.

Great job with them !
