I Might be Guilty . . .
I may have played a role in misinforming folks about tighter weave Montechristi's being less stiff. It seems logical, given the same amount of stiffener, the finer weave (thin straw strand) is likely to be more flexible than a more coarse weave (thicker straw strands). I should admit that I really do not know, and was simply applying logic (presuming same extent of stiffener). Listen to PB, he knows what he is talking about.
