Hello,

I am stuck on some research that I am doing... I want to move out of MA and fulfill a dream of mine, to live in a mid-century modern house (all the better if it is in "as is" condition ;) ) but where do I find them?

I was raised in CA and do not want to move back there :p and because of health reasons, I need to live in a climate that has no humidity. My ds had suggested Colorado? I lived 7+ yrs in Alaska so you know, I CAN do snow in fact want 4 seasons.

Lets see, a nice mid-century modern house along with a man would be this gal's dream come true :D :D

Eastern Colorado may have some mid-century (literal, or style) homes, especially near Denver (thinking not far from downtown, or near the museums or antique row). I recall a few fellow Loungers live in CO currently, so I'll yield to their thoughts if they chime in. I lived there many a year, but moved away to a warmer climate. I wish you luck on your search for a new home and hometown. ;)

Well, Denver has low humidity (usually), over 300 sunny days a year and four seasons. I can't say it has no humidity, though--you might have to move to Arizona or Nevada for that. Most of the time, the winters are mild--more tan than white. And I'm sure you wouldn't have any trouble finding a mid-century house for sale.

If you have health concerns, Denver has state-of-the-art hospitals. (If you lived in my area, you'd be within a mile of two hospitals and the paramedics.)

I can't make any promises about a man, but there's a small group of Loungers in the Denver area: Joie DeVive, Candied Violets (who seldom posts, but is a delightful person), Widebrimm (with two M's), and KPReed. (My apologies to anyone I've missed.)

Let me know if you have any questions about Colorado--I've lived here all my life.

Those houses are more turn-of-the century, give or take. Most of the mid-century houses (1940s through 1960s) are south of Hampden, west of Federal, and east of University. I don't know where the line is on the north.

I'd be happy to give you my email if i'm allowed to post it here?

I can offer that despite all the 'naughty' lists the state of OK seems to make, OKC and Tulsa tend to be on the positive side of 'great places to begin your life', and you may well find mid-century homes in a favorable price range.

Sonia, if you make six more posts (to bring it to 15), we can PM each other. But I don't think the bartenders will mind us talking here about moving to a mid-century house, especially since this thread won't likely need a lot of moderating.

I'll send a PM to Joie--she and her husband were house hunting in Denver just a few years ago.

Oh, sorry. I missed the part about no humidity. Pity....

I probably should have used better wording
what I meant was low humidity. I know there is no such thing as zero humidity (the exception being my 7+ yrs in Alaska) dry enough for your hands to feel like velcro from all that chapping, dry air. I get enough humidity in the shower alone lol and thats useing lukewarm water!

Well, I never made it out to see a movie.

However, I did post a picture (hope it works) for now. Bear in mind, I was leaving to go do laundry, had NO make-up on and my hair was a bit of a mess  i've got naturally curly/wavy hair and its hard to manage ;)

Thanks for posting your photo. :)

Really, I'm sure it's fine to discuss moving to a mid-century house in Colorado here in the thread.

Hi there!

Paisley pointed me in this direction.
Yes, my husband and I bought a house here 2 years ago.
There are oodles of old houses in the Denver area.
We were looking primarily in the suburbs surrounding Denver and saw lots of mid-century homes many of them with the charming details of yesteryear still intact. We saw ones with the original stoves, phone niches, large door chimes-some with niches, curved plaster ceilings, original colored tubs and more. Our little beauty is a brick 1963 charmer with lovely wood floors, a built-in china cabinet and a peach bathtub.

It all depends on what you are looking for. There is a little bit of everything; from small farm houses, to grand early 1960's monsters and everything in between. Prices range according to size and neighborhood. There is even a real estate company that deals specifically in older homes. They tend to run in the higher end, though. If you are interested I could try to hunt up the name. If you get to the point where you want a real estate agent out here, I could give you the name of mine. She was a real peach.

If there are any specifics you want to talk about, let me know. I'd be happy to help! :D

Hi! your house truly sounds peachy. I am looking for a 3bd, single story ranch or 50s bungelow. the knid of house that prolly would be considered a fixer upper, not as they say, 'modernized'. I'd like gas stove/heating, although fireplace's are nice. original colors, woodwork, think eames era modern. my *dream* in this economy would be able to get a deal or forclosed home. and of course as little $ as possible. I'm a single mom on a fixed income.
Feel free to pm me and i'll give you my email.

Sonia:)

I know you're already in New England (only a state away from me, too!) but I've noticed that many of the beach houses here in Rhode Island are from the 40's/50's. My grandmother lived in ours as a real house, as many of our neighbors did. Not that I think you should live in RI, but try looking into maybe lake houses because a lot of those were built in in the 40's and 50's as well. I remember reading an article about all the abandoned 50's houses on a lake in the Catskills. I may have read it here, actually...

I'm looking to move as well, about mid-summer when I'll finally have finished college. I'll probably be looking in PA; Chicago; CA and Boston because I work in theatre. If there are any Loungers who live in those places I'd love to know about apartment rentals in those areas!

Las Vegas is great as long as you can take the heat, Very low humidity and lots of mid century homes close to down town and the strip. And a fab vintage minded group of people and not to far from CA if you feel like a road trip. There is also an Estate Agent here who deals in mid century homes. Let me know if you want his contact details.
